My husband went to a local jeweler and ended up getting the stone through him b/c his prices were comprable to online reputable dealers.  If not, he probably would have bought the stone on line to have set

In store. But our situation is unique and won’t apply to your search. We bought ours in Nassau and because we were buying a color that wasn’t in high demand we were able to talk him down on the price. We also came loaded with information from other jewelers and sources that allowed us negotiate the price down. To top it off, because we were also going to buy a tanzanite and a watch through the guy that allowed us even more leverage. All said and done we got a 1.5 cushion for 4K. When we got back to the states we looked up what that would have cost us and we found that a 1.5 of the same specs would have been 7-8K (that was for an in store price). Online prices were a bit lower but we still got a better price and I wanted to be able to see the diamond 1st before I paid for anything. For me, not all stones are made alike and not all of them spoke to me.

There’s a good chance online will give you a better price, but if you choose to buy in store you could use the information you found through a reputable online dealer to give you a negotiating edge.

We selected our loose diamond from the jeweller we chose (small, niche family business).

He had a good selection and took the time to really let us look at quite a few stones in FI’s price range.

I looked at Blue Nile later; adn the prices he gave us were comparable:  but the thing was, that he gave us a much better deal on our custom setting because we bought through him.  ^_^

I brought mine online together with the setting. I love it since I’m buying round, and it’s much easier to choose compare to other cuts. I can see all the numbers, inclusions and measurement of the stones. I know how to choose a nice round and got down to my best choice. And it definitely save me couple thousands buying online.

But when you are buying instore, it’s good because you can see how it looks in person. One might think the stone is very nice even the number comes out not the best. The dilemma is, wait until you see those excellent stone, then you really can judge by then. I’m not saying all triple exs are nice, coz it’s not, but there’s tools and number I can use to filter my search, not saying u can’t do it in store, but sometime it take times for them to pull up the cert. And online, u can do it right away.

Lots of people loves to go to b&m store to experiences the process of choosing, for me, I just want a very nice stone with a great price where I can’t get in store from where I live.
