Mine is considered Diamond Ivory, kind of the middle between white and ivory

Mine is ivory, but as other bees said “ivory” can really vary by designer. My dress is a very light ivory, stark white did not look good against my pale skin.

My guess is that it was because of your skin tone. I would give her the benefit of the doubt and assume (especially if you’re pale) that she was simply saying that an ivory/ecru would be more flattering on you than a stark white.

As PPs have mentioned, really bright, pure whites can look harsh and have bluish undertones that make many people look washed out – especially us pale girls! “Off white” and “diamond white” are a little warmer, and “ivory,” “ecru,” “champagne” are warmer still. They all basically look like “a white dress” (seriously – not to stereotype, but I think if we all showed our FIs the dozens of dresses we tried on in every conceivable shade of white/ivory/related color, they would say “they’re all white.” Right?) The difference is that the undertones of the different shades will be more or less flattering to different skin tones.

So yeah, I would just assume that your Future Mother-In-Law meant, “I think you have the kind of complexion that will be more flattered by ivory because of the warm undertones.”

Mine was diamond white. It was a softer white that was more flattering to my skin but still looks white in pictures.

I’m echoing the skintone suggestion. I’m really pale, too, and ivory looks better on me than stark white. My dress is “ivory,” but I think it’s more of a soft white than anything. Looks white to me, since ivory makes me think of a yellowish off white.

Honestly, I think your Mother-In-Law said that because you (I’m guessing) are not a virgin.  It is common for older ladies to think only virgins can wear white.

mine is soft white – warmer than white – here I’m wearing it with a white bolero.  You can see the difference when they are together.  I ended up choosing an ivory bolero (same style) and it’s a better match

Mine is ivory. I didn’t consider white when I was shopping, mostly because I wanted more of a vintage/antique look.

I think it totally depends on your skin and hair colour. Some girls can wear absolutely any tone of white or cream. I tried on a few dresses in various colours and as soon as I stepped out in a bright white dress everyone said it was my colour for sure. I think the other colours washed me out.

mine was off-white and it was still quite white, just not stark white.  i think it looks softer in pics.

the men wore white shirts b/c the ivory shirts looked yellow next to my dress.

Ivory.  I have very pale skin and red hair, and the white just looked way too harsh on me.  The dress came in white and ivory, and the white just did not look good.  The guys’ shirts were also ivory (DH’s tie was a pale yellow, as we had yellow and red flowers and decor).

I chose Ian ecru instead of white because my skin is sooo pale that if I wore white, I would blend in. 🙂 Pick a color and a dress that YOU look best in!!!
