holy crapola! That’s insane!!
We found a photographer we love who is doing our maternity pictures in the fall, plus a newborn session at our house the first week he/she arrives. The maternity session is 1 hr and comes with 5 unmarked, high res images of our choice on DVD that we are free to print/enlarge etc. We get all the other images on DVD with the watermark for on-line sharing. For the newborn shoot, we get 4 hrs of her time, at our house plus a CD of 15 high res unmarked pics of our choice for enlargements etc, and a CD with all the other prints with a watermark for online sharing. Both sessions together cost $350.
We found some photographers just hike the prices and maybe even get a few clients willing to pay for it. I think the prices you were given are pretty outrageous, but that’s just me. For what it’s worth, we are in Toronto and things here can be quite costly as well.

Erm. No freaking way. Our wedding photographer who has a masters degree in photography, 20+ years of experience and has won metro area (she is from a huge one), state and national awards for her photos only charges $250 for the dvd of files to print anything but super huge prints. I can think of no photographer where a single file is worth hundreds of dollars. Unless Ansel Adams is zombie newborn shooting, keep looking No picture is worth that kind of.money, especially when there are many other photographers who aren’t crazy.

@AutumnMrs: I’m getting maternity and newborn photos done for $150 each. That includes 2 and 4 hour sessions, and a high resolution disk of ALL the photos so I can print them myself. Also includes edits to photos and any props of hers we want to use including having others (DH or siblings – which baby won’t have) in on some or all of the shots. I would definitely keep looking around for other prices.

I will also say that to me, I can tell the difference in “quality” photography. Where I live, the people who are charging 2-300 dollars for photos are not what I would consider professionals. They use a stock lense, no proper lighting and can’t compose all that great.
When I compare the photos done by my photographer compared to some of the others around here..you can really tell the difference.
Of course, not everyone is as “snobby” when it comes to photography as I am, and they may be 100% happy with the job the $300 photographer does (and, mind you, the $300 photog pics posted here are freaking gorgeous! It’s all based on where you live, i suppose!)

@AutumnMrs: That is way overpriced imo. I would expect to spend $100-200 per shoot with each shoot being an hour. Then tack on the cost of prints ($5-10 per print) or CD with images and full rights ($50-100.)
Who’s taking these photos? Annie Leibovitz?

Is that a new thing now? Newborn photo shoot…what happened to parents just taking pics? We have a nice camera, that is what we’ll do. I think that is really expensive. I only do professional pics of my kids for like their 1st b-days and such.

I charge $150 creative fee and $250 for digital images if they want to purchase them.

My wedding photographer is doing ours and she is 100% professional. She charges $500 for a newborn shoot or $200 for 1 hour baby shoot. Both come with a disc with digitals and partial printing rights. I live in DC as well where the cost of living is high. So I would keep looking.
$3200?? Wouldn’t it be better to spend that kind of money on a college fund or something ??
