I had a really positive experience with the Mirena, post-baby.  I didn’t gain any weight; in fact, I continued to lose even after I had it inserted, without changing my diet or exercise routine.

I didn’t have a child before I got Mirena, but I have had a great experience and didn’t gain weight at all.

I did, but I don’t think it was the mirena so much as my poor dietary choices.. HOWEVER, I noticed it is incredibly difficult to LOSE weight while I have mirena, I’ve never had a problem losing weight before but since I’ve had it it’s extremely difficult.

    ETA:  Never had a child.

Thanks for posting this thread, I’ll be keeping an eye on it. I just got off of the pill (on which I gained an unheard of amount of weight, as well as having many other problems on it) and am waiting on approval of my Mirena. I really hope it doesn’t cause gain for me.

Mirena is not known for weight gain. the hormones going into your system are just a tiny fraction of what you would get compared to any birth control pill. it’s way less than the nuva ring too.

to answer the OP’s question: after starting Mirena, I did not gain any weight at all.

I’ve been reading here and there that doctors are beginning to believe hormonal birth control does not cause significant weight gain (including the pill) — that any weight gain that happens after starting BC is for unrelated reasons and the woman just thinks it’s the hormones doing it.   correlation is not causation.

oh also — I’ve said it before on other threads:  you might read a lot of bad stories about Mirena. but the thing is, when it comes to medicine, people seem to be much more likely to go to the web and talk about it if they had a bad experience.  people who have good experiences don’t really think to go to the web and broadcast it. I think that what you read online may be skewed.

I have about 5 girlfriends who are all on mirena. none of them have had any bad experiences from it.

@janie-janie:  My doctor said the same thing, but she said a side effect of the hormones (basically in all bc, not just mirena) is feeling hungry so you tend to eat more and gain weight… especially true with depo…  Don’t know how true it is but that’s what she said and it made sense.

I’ve not gained any weight on Mirena and I’ve been almost entirely asymptomatic. The only side effect is very light periods and less painful cramps.
