Do we get one automatically or do we have to request one? We just got married at the end of June and th city of boston charges $15 for a copy. I am not changing my name and we live in Australia, so I need a copy to prove we’re married. Do they send us one after the marriage has been registered or do we have to apply for one and pay?

We got one and I think you definitely need it. It was $9 for us but they waived it since he’s military. I used the authorized copy at the social security office and I also had to mail it in with my passport in order to get a new one, but my real one is still at home in case I need it for anything legal. We got our authenticated copy when we received our marriage certificate in the mail. Since you haven’t applied for one, you might have to request it and pay for it, but you might be able to just call them and have it charged, too. The location we went to only took cash, though. I don’t think it hurts to have an official copy on hand somewhere.

We got 5 certified copies, just to have. A few places have asked for one and we’ve had to mail it in, so we haven’t gotten it back.

We received our marriage certificate (fancy certificate with gold seal) in the mail* free of charge (and without requesting it), but we had to pay for certified copies of our marriage license. There was no “applying” for these copies. We just walked in to the probate office (where we initially applied for a license) and requested certified copies. We paid US$4 for each copy.
*We received our marriage certifcate in the mail within five days of our wedding.
