When my boyfriend and I first started looking, I only had eyes for a Tiffany’s ring. Because of budget, I thought I wouldn’t go higher than a .5 ct center stone. After I went to some other places and tried some rings on, and did more research for settings and styles, I thought I’d go up to around maybe a 1 ct. Of course, bigger was always better, but because of budget I thought we couldn’t go higher than around a .75-1 carat, unless we get a CZ/Asha/Moissy. However, we went to pick out my center stone the other day after my jeweler brought back a collection from a trade show, and we chose a 1.31ct! There was a 1.01ct, and I was going to say that one, but my boyfriend fell in love with the look of the 1.31ct, and immediately said “let’s do that one”. So… I’m going to have about 50% finger coverage. 🙂
So, did you get the size you wanted? Why or why not? Do you regret anything about your size choice?

Yes and no. We picked the ring together (mostly) and I got a 1ct moissanite. I kind of wanted to go smaller (my mom has 0.8, which is just the “normal” size in my head), but they didn’t list that as an option on the webpage, and I didn’t think about doing a custom order. I’m reallly happy with my stone, and I think as I get older I will appreciate the size, but it still feels a little showy from time to time.

@mrspinesol: My original ring was a 3/4ct diamond solitaire, and given that we had just finished undergrad that was precisely a half carat more than I was expecting at the time!
Nine years later I upgraded my ring to a 1ct center diamond in a halo when I lost the original ring. It was my choice, so yes, I got what I wanted!

My stone is a 1.01 cushion cut, and I absolutley love it…. I initially wanted a 2 carat center stone…. but I absolutely love my ring and the man that gave it to me.

Yes, I got the size we both liked best. Fiance was originally thinking of something considerably larger (based on advice from a friend of his, I think), but as soon as I tried a ring on with that size diamond, NEWP!! It looked, well, silly on me. I kept trying on sizes and shapes until we found the sweet spot.
Not purely coincidentally, my diamond is neither huge nor tiny compared to the people around me, so when my ring is noticed, it’s not noticed for its diamond size, but its other features, all of which I love to gush about. That’s exactly what I wanted. I wanted to avoid the “Huge!” “Tiny!” carat races as much as possible: both in terms people trying to assess me by it, and in terms of the “social norms” I would be conveying to other people about what size theirs “should or should not be.” I wanted to leave the size component basically blank, as it’s my least favorite symbolism about engagement rings, and by going for something “normative” for my surroundings, I essentially was able to do that under most contexts. It is also a great look on my hand, it looks very “engagement-y” to me (again since it’s a size I’m used to seeing, and is also in yellow gold). I’m very happy with it, it’s the perfect ring for me.

yes and no for me too. I got the center stone I wanted (at the time) but there was a misunderstanding between my dh and I. He thought I wanted a pave band, but I wanted a plain gold band. So, while the diamond is beautiful I prefer a solitaire. Sometimes I feel that the stone I picked is too big…pretty, but too big for me.

I originally wanted a 6mm cushion cut Moissanite because I felt it would look nice on my finger and was a reasonable budget. FI ended up ordering a 6.5mm and I love it!

yes I got a 1.5 carat stone in a halo and it was way too big so I am sizing down to a 1carat

@mrspinesol: You should add ‘I had no previous preference but I love it’ and ‘I had no preference and I don’t like it’ or something worded along those lines for people like me.
Most of you will think I’m crazy but the thought of the size of the centre diamond/stone never once crossed my mind while I was in the waiting phase, but I did have a metal obsession! I got a 0.5 carat and I’m very happy with it. Shiny and pretty but not overbearing 🙂

I didn’t vote because I got a center stone that was bigger than I ever thought I would receive. I never thought I would be given a 1 carat stone, and I was given a 1.44 carat stone. It was a very nice surprise.

I have a 1.5 carat diamond and I looooove it!!

I initially wanted a one carat diamond, but after trying one on and comparing it to the two carat, I decided I preferred the larger stone. We ended up choosing a 2.2 carat oval (which measures closer to a 3 carat) and it is perfect!
I love how the oval shape elongates my finger and that while it’s still classic, it’s not as common as a round, but still has maximum sparkle! It’s currently set in a 2 mm halo with a plain shank, but we’re having it reset into a three stone ring with two yellow diamonds around 1/2 carat each.

I have a 1.04 ct cushion! My ring is 1.84 tcw though 🙂 A lot of bling! I may upgrade the quality of my diamond one day, but for now it’s perfect!

Yes, I picked it and I love it 🙂 0.61ct diamond.

Darling Husband orginially gave me a 1.47 square radiant. I loved the size but the stone wasn’t right. It was returned for a 1.10 long cushion. If I was able to do an even swap I would have.
