I showed him some pictures and he went by himself – He wouldn’t let me go with him.

Me and my SO went ring “browsing” many times over the course of 2 YEARS. First it started off as a browse since we were walking by, then it became a proper “lets go look at rings”

Finally, after many trips and trying on rings etc, he secured a deposit down on my ring when I was there, least I know we both love the ring, but I just don’t know WHEN I will see it again!

Suspense!

@spaneshal: 2 years?! I would drive myself crazy!

We went ring shopping together so that he can get an idea of the styles I liked. He knows how picky I am.

We went together though I never pictured myself doing that. But it was very exciting and it helped me realize what looked good on me. I also found out that some styles that I liked on others or in pictures really didn’t work on me. My ring is similar in style to a specific ring I fell in love with. He has told me that, if left to his own devices, would have come up with something totally different. All that being said, I LOVE what he came up with in the end, but I trust him enough to have done the whole thing on his own. More than anything, it was definitely a nice bonding experience. I wouldn’t worry that the ring isn’t coming just because he hasn’t asked you to go shopping. I know it’s growing in popularity, but I think the majority of guys still prefer the element of surprise.

We browsed jewelry stores while we were hanging out at the mall one day – his suggestion.  However, I had recently been out with my now-brother-in-law, helping him pick out a bridal set for my sister.  I think my ring trip for my sister allowed him to realize how complicated picking a ring can be!

We did. We went in together and he bought me the ring I pointed out on the spot… they sent it out to be resized and we had it a week later… he of course made me suffer a week before proposing even though I put it in the locked box with him… lol

It is very normal. I hear lots of people do it after or before they are engaged. My fiance let me pick out my rings before he “officially” asked me to marry him, but it was after he told me of his plans with me (he made everything so special and sweet for the proposal, even we both knew what was going on).

I did not know people did this and I felt weird at first because it was all new to me. I originally just went in to get my ring size and that’s it–but I ended up finding them together once we took a look! 🙂 I was going to let him pick it out, but we couldn’t be happier at the way it turned out. It was so much fun and it was so sweet how he let me pick them out.

We have gone twice, once back in January and then about a month ago. I tried on a few different styles and he knows which ones I liked the best, particularly the one that I love the most. Not engaged yet, but hope to be soon. I think it’s a good idea to go so he knows what you do and do not like, plus you can get sized if you’re not sure what your size is, like I was the first time we went.

Yes!  We went together because he wanted me to pick out exactly what i wanted.  He also knows I am a better negotiator than he (the nature of my job) and I was able to get the price down by about 38%.  I was able to pick my dream setting and stone, but it’s a double edged sword…sine we got a Tacori, it had to be special ordered so we’ve been waiting a month now to get it…and when it comes in they will call him and he wants to be able to at least have a true surprise proposal moment, so I’m not exactly sure how that will happen.  It’s driving me crazy waiting for the moment!!

Yes we did. I picked out my setting and the diamond. DH loves to spend money lol and I’m a bit more conservative when it comes to spending money so I wanted to make sure that he didn’t get something too over the top. I knew exactly what size diamond I wanted and I knew he was going to be in the mind frame of bigger is better. My proposal was still a complete surprise though.

One of my relatives used to say “Engagements should never be a surprise. Proposals are the surprise.”  and I grew up assuming the ring was something you did as a couple.  My father told me the story of shopping with my mother for her diamond, so I wanted the same.

My Fiance suggested we stop in to the jeweler that he uses and it was clear that he had looked at rings before (the jeweler we work with had notes in her little book).  Interestingly, he had been looking at three stone rings and I was really drawn to the halo rings instead.  I found the setting I liked, but left the selection of the actual diamond up to him.  He did that on another day.

Fiance wanted to take me to look at rings so he had an idea of what I liked. I think I changed my mind like 4 times. I ended up finally picking the ring I have now, 3 months before he proposed. He had them bring in different diamonds and he picked out the one he loved most and had it set. I could not have asked for more. 🙂

Fiance and I designed my ring together. I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything!

I had intially started off by emailing him pics of what I liked but i have a halo cushion cut and it is hard to really find a lot of places that have what I wanted. In the end we decieded to just get it made.
