I see having unprotected sex and actively TTC as two different things.

My parents actively tried for me, but had such a bad birthing experience so just let nature take it’s course for my brothers, and since my mother was older anyway (39) it might not have happened. They were an extra surprise though since they are twins.

I don’t know when we will actively TTC, probably after a year of letting nature do it’s thing.

Pretty much the moment we got married, we decided to switch to a mix of rhythm, pull-out, and condoms. I can’t take BC, so we’ve been using condoms for 4 years… yuck. So anyway, the plan was that pretty much all the time except for immediately before my period, he’d pull out and during the 5 days before ovulation and the 2 or 3 after, we’d use condoms. 2 months later, we were 4 weeks pregnant.

@Mrs.Elivs: i voted your second option as it definitely describes what happened, lol.  I was VERY surprised….although, i guess you can say i was “emotionally” surprised. i was not expeciting it AT ALL and i was basically shocked and panicked when i got the BFP….but, i couldn’t logically be surprised that it happened, because, well, we weren’t being very careful! we were alternating between putting condoms on halfway thru or pulling out if we never got to the condoms (as in, oops, gotta pull out quick!). So ya, i got pregnant because we were being very slack on BC.  However, we were also being so slack becuase while we were not planning for a baby right now, we did feel ready and knew we would be okay if we had one.  So i guess we were leaving it to chance with mild efforts at preventing it.  Before we got married and we’re LDR for a year (and in grad school for years before that), we were very vigilant with BC.

Dirty Delete was a surprise, but it was sort of inherent because I can’t/won’t take BC and we weren’t 100% with condoms.  She was an awesome surprise, though! We pulled the goalie earlier this year (I stopped charting, no more condoms) so we’re doing that until the wedding then we’ll really start TTC #2.

I guess we were not trying, but not preventing either… this will be a bit long, but here’s what happened in our case…

Dh and I got engaged in July of 2010 and planned a wedding for Sept 2011. Our plan was to start trying to get pregnant in the summer of 2011, so at the most I’d only be 3 months pregnant at our wedding.

For birthcontrol, I had been charting and using the pull out method.

Well, I had been baby CRAZY for a couple years at this point and couldn’t wait for us to start a family. Ideally I wanted to be married first, but was very open to moving the wedding if need be(which ended up happening).

Then our good friends had thier first child on Dec 23, 2011 and my baby fever went through the roof. Even Darling Husband was getting wrapped up in the whole baby thing. Then, on my Jan cycle, voila, I got pregnant.

I gotta say, I was shocked. Because we had been just charting (avoiding my fertile days) and using the pull and pray method, there were previous months that we had “slip-ups” where I was sure we were pregnant…and we werent. That month, I was not even considering we were pregnant. I had ovulated 4 days earlier than normal, and we only had sex once, 5 days before that ovulation date. I figured there was no way I was pregnant, so when my period was late, I was sure my body was just being weird.

I just about fell over when I saw two pink lines! The happiest surprise of my life!

For our next child, I am PRAYING for an actively trying, planned baby. lol I am so scared  we’ll be surprised too early with the next baby. I have an IUD and make Darling Husband pull out every time though….and when AF comes back (still not here since giving birth!) I’ll start charting again.

We were on our first month with no birth control, just kinding seeing what happened! And now I’m 12 weeks pregnant! So it WAS suprising for us. While we were ready if it happened, we didn’t expect anything to happen the first time!

@Mrs.Elivs:  Every woman’s body and cycle is different. We must have just miscalculated when I actually ovulate. We were not expecting a baby, but we weren’t exactly shocked; I mean, we know how biology works!

@mrsSonthebeach:  Just curious, were you charting or anything? Most women don’t ovulate on day 14 of thier cycle like we’re led to think.. I know lots of people get pregnant when following the traditional rhythm method.

It was definitely a surprise for us!  I was charting, but with the stress of the wedding and not sleeping much, my chart was all over the place.  I ovulated almost a week late and got pregnant on our honeymoon.  Totally unexpected surprise.  I think I’m still in shock.

@urchin:  No. We estimated day 13, because I have a very regular 27 day cycle, but I must have ovulated earlier, because we had unprotected sex really early that time around and not again until right before my period.

Wow, I’m jealous of all you lucky ladies!!!! My Darling Husband would rather have a surprise pregnancy too. We’ve been using the pullout method for almost 10 years with no accident. I really don’t think we are going to have an accident lol. My Darling Husband does pull out kinda early though; he has really good self control I suppose. Every month I hope for a surprise….until we actively ttc.
