Mine is tonight, and yes, we’re hosting (with help from mum and MOH). Honestly though, in my area everyone hosts their own, I don’t think i’ve heard of anyone around here NOT hosting.

So far nobody has mentioned anything and I see NO reason why people would be offended. At all.

I’m kind of surprised people still have engagement parties.  I thought they were outdated or only done in movies these days, but if anyone I knew did have one, I wouldn’t care who hosted it.

We were planning on one for ourselves… but since when we announced our engagement, NONE of FI’s family said congrats except his mom and one sister, we nixed that idea haha. It’s not that they object to our relationship- they’re just not happy, emotional people… and that’s kinda the point of an engagment party, I think. My family was more positive, but they’re in another country. Had we been there, my mom would have hosted one for us/with us.

We did an informal “hey, you want to come celebrate our engagement at X place with us?”.  We didn’t “host it” as I see it cause everyone paid their own, but everyone we invited came for at least a while.  Most came for the time there, and some went with us elsewhere after.  One lady I worked with previously came on her way to a funeral and gave me an awesome gift (which I wasn’t expecting!).

I think it depends on the crowd a lot, and how you phrase it, and what you’re doing.  Our event did not include family, but only friends.

So I didn’t vote, since we didn’t “host our own”… as in throw a party and pay for it.  It started with a couple friends that said “hey lets go eat/drink at X to celebrate” and wondered if these other folks would come and wanted us to invite anyone else we wanted.

@icetea:  Um, no. They’re not. Lol. But these are people who aren’t touchy/feely/huggy/kissy/excited-about-life with their own brother (FI) or CHILDREN… so what can I really expect? Haha. Future Mother-In-Law is excited. ONE Future Sister-In-Law is excited. Future niece (10 years old) was excited last we spoke about it several weeks ago. My mom is excited. And Fiance is excited! So that’s enough for me! Just gotta try to put the negative idiots out of my mind and ignore them when they DON’T congratulate us on our wedding day :oP Haterz gon’ hate.

Who else would host your engagement party?

Edit: Wait…are engagement parties supposed to be like the showers and stuff where someone else throws a party in your honour? How many parties does everyone else have to organise for you if you’re engaged!?

We threw a really casual house party to celebrate our engagement. We had a roomate at the time who liked to bake so he made us a cake. It was really fun!

My Fiance threw a “celebration” at a bar here in Chicago with about 40-50 of our closest friends. We called it a good reason to celebrate as opposed to an e-party.

We had a section of the bar roped off with waitresses, appetizers and bottle service. The bar even gave us a few bottles of champagne and patron to celebrate with For free. No one was upset and no one brought any gifts. So, it worked out perfectly for us.

We would do it again in a second.

We threw our own engagement party and it was just a simple gathering at a nice bar with cake, music and a photobooth (because we owned one). No one complained that we hosted it and it was a lovely evening.
