I didn’t pay for my cake tasting, but I did have to pay for the caterer’s tasting. I think it’s pretty normal for vendors to charge as there is a cost for labor and ingredients. I don’t know what the normal price range is though.

I do not recall having to pay for our cake tasting, although it’s likely that the vendor simply covers her cost for these types of samplings through the prices she charges for her products.  We had to pay for the food tasting for our venue, however.

We paid for anyone other than the bride and groom.  My mom came to taste the cake with us, so we had to pay $10 for her.  We also didn’t pay to taste the food at the caterer.

No, I did not pay for the tasting – and did tastings with two different bakers. I wouldn’t blame them for doing a small fee though and deducting it from the cost of your cake. I actually think that would be smart business. But I’m glad as a customer that they didn’t, and I can see how it would turn people off. Depends on the market & your target client I think.

@Ms.Sugarsnap:  No, I would not call that typical. Most places I’ve seen offer free tastings. My tasting was free.

ETA: I believe my tasting at the venue is also free. Should be; I’m giving them like $11,000 for this wedding!

I tried four bakeries before I decided and none of them charged for tastings.  They all gave me the same things: choice of 4 flavors, fillings, and icings made into 4 inch cakes which I took home to try with Darling Husband.

Edit: OMG we ate 16 cakes in making a choice, I never thought about that.

@inky_1: Wow. That’s great. Our venue bill was about $20K, yet the venue charged a $75 fee for Darling Husband and me to attend one of their semi-annual, large-group-attended tastings.

@Brielle:  Well, the $11k is the estimate. lol. And that’s before alcohol. But having a Sunday AM wedding = savings.

@inky_1:  We actually did not have any alcohol, except for offering a choice between a glass of champagne or sparkling cider for our toast.  We had an open bar with sodas, juices, iced tea, and water and just ATE really well! LOL 🙂

I didn’t pay for any cake before the $500 for the one we picked.  That place brought out a huge plate of cake that me, mom and dad couldn’t finish.  I had tried a couple others before then and didn’t pay.

I also didn’t pay for our tasting with our caterer.  That I would have been more amicable to since they made our top choices special for us to taste.  One of the caterers we looked at did charge for tastings, but it was a nominal fee ($40?) for up to 4 people.
