My mum lives in Sweden, so that pretty much made it impossible for me to go dress shopping with her. Now, I wasn’t too upset about that – I’m not so sentimental and mum doesn’t like shopping, so it might have been for the best. I did try on one dress with a close friend and got the “so pretty” but nothing more response (I want proper feedback or none at all). After that I tried on two dresses myself and for the final dress trial at DB I had sort of given up on the idea of keeping things a secret from my husband so I just brought him along. He was great in the store, making me feel pretty and providing constructive comments.
If your mum can’t be happy for you, don’t bring her along – you don’t need negative energy already at this stage of the wedding planning.

I went with my Maid/Matron of Honor, and ended up walking out with a sample that day (had a six-month engagement, so I really didn’t have time to waste.)
If your think your Mom’s attitude will affect your shopping experience, then I’d definitely recommend getting someone else to join you. Even though your experience will be different than what mine was, I wouldn’t have wanted to have any negativity involved with it. Or…give her an “ultimatum”- no negativity, or you’re outta here! :)-
The dress can be a really fun part of it- how awesome is it that you’re going to make your own dress!!

@Creiddylad: I went with my mom. I don’t care what other relatives or friends have to say about what I wear on my wedding day. My mom is the only person who is actually honest, its a bonus that she has good taste.

I went to one shop with just my mom – I wanted something low key to just try on shapes and get over the freak out that nothing would look good on me.
Then I went with my mom, my Future Sister-In-Law, and my 3 BM’s to the second shop and bought my dress. It was very stress free

My mom came to two dress boutiques with me, I went with a bridesmaid to one other.
The place and time that I actually found my dress was at a local bridal store and I had my mom, aunt and cousin (MOH) with me. It was a fun day.
I wasn’t opposed to going on my own though if I was getting overwhelmed or felt like I needed to just be by myself to evaluate my feelings.
