hey bees! I’d love to know what everyone did when it came to last names. I’m super close with my family and almost feel that giving up my last name would in a way be giving up my family (I know this sounds silly). What did you all do?

I will be changing my last name (haven’t filled out the paperwork yet) I share my first and middle name with my aunt and grandma which is enough of a connection with my family for me, plus my last name is super common so it’s not that much of a connection to begin with.

I made my maiden my middle name, and took his. It was really important to him and I enjoy having his last name (guess I’m more traditional than I thought).

I didn’t change my name. 🙂

I’ll be taking his last name. I’m undecided as to whether I’ll be keeping my last name as a middle name or saving it for a future child’s name.
If I go the middle name route, I’ll probably keep my middle name also… which will give me an extremely long name, lol. It would be first name (2 syllable) middle name (3 syllable) maiden name (2 syllable) then FH’s 3 syllable last name

I will be taking his last name

I will be taking DHs name officially in January. I am going by it for the most part, and then hyphenating on other things for the sake of ID. I am a Stay-At-Home Mom so really the only times I use my legal name is with doctors.
It was never a question for me. I’m pretty traditional though.

I hear you on the family connection bit! I changed my name because his is a lot easier to spell, hyphenation wasn’t an option with the length of my name, and I want to have the same (easy) last name as our eventual children.

No change. And we’ve been happily married almost 40 years.
P.S. His brother’s wife didn’t change her last name, either; his sister changed hers – go figure?

I’m going the first name -middle name – maiden name – new last name route. I need to look into the legal steps to make that happen though, because I think it’s much more involved than a normal change.

Yes, I changed my last name to my husband’s 🙂

I also took his last name and shifted my maiden name to my middle name. That way both last names are a part of you.

I took his last name 🙂 I like sharing a name with my hubby

I was going to take his, which I was 100% happy with. And then he completely surprised me and said he wanted to take my last name instead! I’m super excited about it!

I took his last name; we both took my maiden as our middle names.
