I was planning all along to take pictures at my venue before the ceremony and reception, but my photographer suggested finding another location for pictures and then taking more when we get to the venue… problem is my venue is an hour from home and I don’t know the area!
Is it really necessary to take photos at a different location or were you happy taking your pre-wedding photos all at the venue? What do you suggest?

We took all photos at the venue (our ceremony and reception were at the same place). I personally would not have wanted to take pics away from our venue. I wouldn’t want to waste the time, time is precious the day of.

We took all of our photos at the venue and it was SO nice. I can’t imagine having to drive somewhere. We got dressed at the venue and went right outside to do our first look and then all of our photos (which took almost 2 hours). We finished right as the ceremony was about to start and we just popped right outside. If you have a decent area at the venue, I’d definitely do them there because its such less hassle.

We’re taking all of our pictures at our venue. Luckily it is a huge site that offers tons of different type of photo opportunites. It really depends on your venue and what types of photos you want. Good luck!

We took most of our photos at the venue, but it was on a ranch property in the middle of the desert so there were lots of different areas to go to. Our photographers scouted some locations the morning of and took us on a little drive maybe 5 minutes away to get some really awesome ones. I think unless you have a specific place in mind, your photographer should make suggestions since it’s his idea.

We took photos at the church, then went to a nearby park for photos (at my photographer’s suggestion), and then took a couple at the venue. The park photos are my favorite. I would ask your photographer for suggestions.

We are having a mid April evening wedding and are likely having a first look. Since our ceremony and reception are at the same location and its already evening, we are trying to eliminate time between the ceremony and reception. That means we are seriously considering photos at our venue. It may also cut costs because we won’t have to hire transportation to and from the photo location.

In New Zealand it is very typical to go after the ceremony and before the reception and take location photos. in the rental cars. Usually about an hour or maybe 2. And the guests have entertainment like a photo booth or games, guestbook, drinks and food that type of thing.

If you like and trust your photographer, I would defer to whatever they think is best. If they’re telling you that you should take pictures at a different location, as long as time allows, I would consider it. Have you asked them why they suggest it? As a wedding photographer, I can tell you that we make it work in all sorts of terrible locations but when given the chance to go somewhere else we’d jump at it. A lot of my weddings do take place all in the same location, but when we have the time (such as during a first look) we will utilize other locations if need be.
