Hi Bee! My wedding isn’t until 2017 but I voted yes! Our photographer owns her own business and we will be tipping her. I think it’s a good way to show your appreciation for their work and time, regardless of whether they own their own business.

You do not tip anyone who owns their own business. They make their own rates, if they want paid more they can charge more.

I did tip, but it was a special circumstance. My photographer is an old family friend, and I’ve known him for 22 years. He gave me a 50% discount on his photo package, which was for 6 hours, and then later told me he would be shooting for 8. So I tipped him $100, in addition to inviting him to the rehearsal dinner (purely as a guest).

bluebee19:  So after reading some of the other Bee’s responses I did some digging on my own and found this little tidbit on The Knot’s website: “You’re not expected to give your shutterbugs any dough beyond their normal fees. Yet if the wedding photographer or videographer doesn’t own the studio, consider tipping each person (or give a certain amount with a thank-you note to disperse to staff”

So I guess if you’re photographer owns their own business a tip isn’t necessarily expected? That’s news to me! Either way we’re still planning on tipping our photographer. While she’s incredibly talented, she’s just started her business and cut us a serious deal. Oh! And I am a US bride. 🙂

Generally speaking, you are not required to tip the proprietor of any business – but should always tip their staff (should they be working your event). However it’s always a nice gesture should you feel they went above and beyond.

No, as OP said, never tip anyone who owns the business. If they have an assistant or second shooter that person can be tipped out.

Our florist owns the business, but she will have help doing the floral installation and setup so those people get a tip but she does not.

bluebee19:  Our photog is a husband and wife duo too! The business is in her name, but I’m not going to tip her husband as I dont think he’s technically an employee either.

We totally tipped our photographers, for a few reasons. First, they really worked with our budget and gave us a complete package for $2500 less than their normal price. Second, they drove about 6 hours to our location and stayed for the weekend with two of their wives (who also helped out), with no travel fee added. They camped on the property and were totally happy! And finally, when they heard our photo booth vendor no-showed, they set up a little area for us with a camera, tripod and remote so that we could still enjoy one. They really went above and beyond for us. They also did our videography. We’ve maintained a relationship with them, even 2 years later, and we are just very very grateful for the wonderful experience we had with them.
