I did and very soon after our wedding. I picked my own ring though so it wasn’t to big a deal. Long story short I went to work at a jewelry store soon after and saw the most beautiful rings….as you could probably imagine! So I talked to husband and we had one custom made. I love it but it’s been 8 years now so I want a bigger stone now…so we’ve been looking at 2ct emerald cut solitaires and I too will get it for Christmas. Don’t feel guilty it’s just an object and won’t change your marriage! I’m happy for you and can’t wait to see it! Can you show us your current ring? Here’s my original and current.

bb1018 :  that’s a beautiful set! What size is your current stone and what size will you be upgrading to? Will your new diamond be a round as well?

Yes, I did but it was a weird situation and REALLY long story.

The ring he proposed with was a custom ring that, through a miscommunication, was just completely wrong, but since he had a planned proposal with my whole family there, he just proposed with it and then we sent it back after to have it corrected and they completely recast it. The ring they sent me back was close but still not exactly what I had asked for.

The other thing was I originally had a moissanite center that I thought i wanted, but realized I wanted a diamond. I really love the moissy sparkle in certain light, but overall I didnt like the times when it looked “plasticy”, and I had an august vintage moissy, it was gorgeous and REALLY CLOSE to a diamond… but still wasnt a diamond. So my fiance bought me a diamond …but then it didn’t fit in the setting so we had to have a new setting made. I changed vendors to have the exact one made that I wanted originally.

So I kind of feel like although it’s probably technically an upgrade because I went from the moissy to a diamond, it’s not actually the ring he originally proposed with anyway because of the original vendor misunderstanding with the setting, that original ring was sent back 2 days after he proposed and completely remade.

bb1018 :  I kept my original diamond and had it made into a simple necklace.

I had a 1/2 CT round diamond solitaire that we traded in when I upgraded to my 2 CT solitaire, but it wasn’t my original engagement ring.  Although dated, I will never part with my original wedding set, it means too much to me. I’m so sentimental.

Your current set is beautiful, by the way!  We’re about to do that (again!) too.  My original engagement ring has a 1.05 ct diamond and I love it.  Seven years into our marriage, my hubby upgraded me to a 1.5 ct diamond (I still have the 1.05 ct as he wanted me to keep it).  However, the 1.5 ct never completely grew on me for some reason and I didn’t wear it much.  But now it’s our tenth year of marriage and he wants to buy me one last upgrade and I’ve asked for a princess cut. Both of my other ones were round.  I’ve always admired princess cuts and after trying a few on over the last couple of years in jewelry stores, I’m sold on it and I think it will be a really nice addition to my round cut.  And I’m selling the 1.5 ct in order to get the new princess cut!  I’m keeping my original diamond as it means a lot to me.  I hope you love your new ring and for what it’s worth, it’s great that your hubs is on board with you getting a new one!

I have a different ring completely than my original. My original was a hand me down, that I love to this day, but my spouse was dead set on letting me pick something my style, so I have both. The OG hangs out in my jewelery box mostly. I feel very lucky to be able to have both! One from the past and one that is meaningful to our relationship =)

I wouldn’t feel too guilty, but I get the sentimental value of something that has been yours.

Just think of it as your diamond getting a transformation!

I’m currently experiencing the guilt feeling too ! My FH said he would upgrade my engagement ring as a wedding present (also around our 10 year anniversary). I won’t be able to see it until the morning of the wedding so I’m trying to offset the guilt of changing it with that fact !

bb1018 :  LOL – my husband is so into his cars too and loves to tell me there’s another car he wants!  So he understands my obsession with rings. 🙂  The 1.5 ct is a really beautiful ring, but I think it’s the cut of the diamond that I didn’t grow used to. My original 1 ct is an old European cut, which I absolutely adore.  My husband is thinking around 1.5 ct for the princess cut but it will depend on specs and price, of course. I can go lower on the carat for a really nice one.
