I’ve never used a travel agent, and I sought a few out for our honeymoon. None of them wanted to work within our budget, and none of them seemed to pay attention to what our prioties were. All the itineraries were very generic.

We’ve always planned our big trips ourselves, and ultimately we are happy we planned our honeymoon ourselves. We got what we wanted without hassling with a third party.

dkdm226:  Generally speaking, you can find the same deals as a travel agent.

The one time that you may wish you had used an agent is when something goes wrong on your trip. If there is a major illness, injury or a natural disaster, you may appreciate someone back home working on your behalf to get you out of there.

For trips to countries where you have to use a travel agent by law, like on amazing race I would. Otherwise it is unnecessary. It is simple to book online

I had a different experience than PP. I research like CrAZY and never found a deal as good as my travel agent. What people forget is that many agents have relationships with resort companies and can offer better deals than one can find themselves.

For instance- Our honeymoon was to the DR. I found a good deal online but checked in with a travel agent to compare. Our agent was wonderful and found us this deal:

-Better flights (times, connecting flights, etc)

-An additional night at the resort

-A better room (swim out with private cabana)

-Private transportation to and from the airport

-Cheaper overall price by close to $600

I DEFINITELY recommend checking in with an agent and seeing what they can do for you.

I’ve never used a travel agent.  I tried once, and they found me the same deal I could find online for a flight AND wanted to charge me a $40 booking fee per ticket.  That was the last time I bothered with a travel agency.  It may be worth while to see if they have any deals like theshannondee pointed out, but do your own research too and just see which is better.  As far as activities and easy of getting around and what to do though, getting around hawaii and booking everythign yourself is a breeze.

I reached out to a few travel agents regarding flights to Europe. I needed an open jaw flight (flying into Rome, flying out of Paris). The quotes I got from the few were higher than what I found on my own, so I ended up booking the flights for myself. I think the agents would’ve had better prices for me had we stayed in hotels, but I booked B&B’s and apartments in each city we stayed in.

The only time I used a travel agent was last year. I ended up only booking the hotel through her because her airfare prices were higher than what I found. For the hotel, she beat the lowest rate I found by less than $50.

I love planning things tho….hubby and I go on a vacay every year, and I’ll book everything (flight, hotel, tours, transportation, routes lol, etc.). So I say it depends on the person and situation. Are you planning on just staying on one island or island hopping, are you doing tons of activities or mainly relaxing?

I personally don’t. Whenever I tried they came back to me with insane prices. I could go online right away and find the same deal like $500 cheaper right away.

We used a travel agent for our honeymoon to Tahiti, Moorea, & Bora Bora. We couldn’t be happier that we did! She paid attention to detail & our budget. She worked well with incorporating everything we wanted & staying within our budget. In my opinion, having a travel agent was totally worth it!

SO happy we used an agent. Fiance and I were a bit over ambitious in that we dicided to plan a wedding in 8 months and buy a house at the same time (plus we are both self -employed) so we had ZERO time to plan a vacation as well. We found an agent that only took a small percentage of our total budget and created a super custom AMAZING 10 day trip to Costa Rica for us.  Sooo worth it

We are using a travel agent for our honeymoon.

I just like that it takes the hassel away of booking a trip. When my friend and I booked a trip to Disney and our flight got cancelled with NO flights going out for at least 4-5 days, all we had to do is pick up the phone and tell our agent and within an hour, she had us all rebooked for a different week.

We didn’t specifically use a travel agent, but we did book with a AAA travel agent. I do a lot of research, but didn’t even know where to start to look. Plus, where I live, we have to fly to a main airport for most flights, and it was easier having someone else figure that all out instead of us.

She gave us some options of places she knew people stayed and really liked. Then, flight plans based on price/departure times. We also had 4 months to pay the trip off in full, which was super nice. I’d definitely do it again. And, the travel insurance for if something happened. Plus, by booking through Delta Vacations, we had no problem with shuttles to and from the airport.

I know a friend who is on vacation now who had issues just getting out of town due to plane issues. Her agent took care of everything, and made sure what other flights they could get one, that they still were guaranteed their stay, etc. They also purchased the travel insurance, which sovers most of this.

I’m way too much of a control freak to use a travel agent. I love researching and find deals and planning everything out.  I don’t think I could give all that up!

Call around. I think it really depends on the travel agency. The one I work with is no more money than booking on our own but we don’t have to do the work! They get paid through comission from the airlines, resorts, etc. Plus, she found the cheapest flights. We couldn’t even find a price ourselves to beat that. It’s also nice if flights change. It’s just one major thing that you don’t have to worry or think about! Also, they can get some hidden perks and bonuses if you go through them sometimes. Our agent was great at giving us feedback about our resort. She told me what rooms/areas she has booked people and what ones people liked better. You don’t always get that kind of feedback online researching yourself. I simply picked up a bag of information the week before our wedding and all of our information was put together for us! You can also make payments towards it so you don’t need to pay all up front.

This comes from me who used to do event planning and used to coordinate travel for a large corporation…I felt good giving up control. 🙂

dkdm226:  I did a ton of research on my own all the while our travel agent was working on our behalf, and that seemed to be the perfect mix for us.

There should not be any additional expense to you for using a travel agent.
