Every single place I looked at (maybe 5 or 6) had an exclusive caterer.

i’d say 80% of the venues i’ve looked at have a caterer, including basically all of the nicer venues that are indoors.

Most places I looked at also had an exclusive caterer. I found a location that does not…but I am in the Louisville KY area =) Wish I could help!

No, we can use one of the ones they recommend or find our own. I suggest calling the caterers that you are considering and asking them for some venues that they have catered and then check those out or you will drive yourself crazy.

We went with really unique venues, so no required caterers. Would that be a route you would take? You could definitely  do what you wanted, food-wise!

We actually were looking for a place with an in-house caterer, so yes 🙂

My venue has a culinary school.  Normally they would make use use the school as the caterer, but since the wedding is when school is out, we can use whoever we want.

This was a dealbreaker for us. I didn’t consider any venue that required us to use their caterer. I just had the impression that in-house catering is always overpriced and not that good, and I knew we’d want to search around for our own tastes to be satisfied. We’re pretty picky when it comes to food and I didn’t want just your standard salad-dinner roll-beef-or-fish type of dinner. There were plenty of venues that didn’t have any in-house catering, it tends to be the type of place that doesn’t exist solely for event functions. Some wineries (ours) don’t have any catering, some public spaces, etc.

Eh, yes and no. Our passed canapés are coming from the venue as is all our drinks but the cake is being supplied by a family friend and they’re ok with that. I guess also because our venue is a gastropub so they’re kind of known for their food! It’d be a bit of a slap in their faces if we catered ourselves. I don’t mind at all, the food is amazing and we get to make our own selections so we can cater towards vegetarians as well as meat eaters.

Yes, but the chef at our club was one of the reasons we chose it to begin with!

Unfortunately, this is pretty common.  I think you will run into this a lot. Catering and bar sales are what make money for venues like this…

Just thought about this: I used to work for an independent caterer (had no venue of her own).  That caterer had a list of venues that she knew she was welcome to work out of.

Perhaps if you found a great vegan caterer, you could ask him/her for venue suggestions.

So I don’t know anything about either of those restaurants you mentioned, but is it possible that you could have your wedding there?  That’s what we’re doing…
