I also use MFP (abbie017 on there if you want a new friend!)

(1) I eat anywhere between 1200 and 1400 calories a day, and make sure I’m eating a ton of protein, and fewer carbs.

(2) I usually eat at least half the exercise calories back.  I know this is a contested question on MFP, but I think you really need to fuel your body after a work out.  You used a lot of fuel during the workout, and you need high-quality food to replace what you burned — this should be high protein to encourage muscle building!

(3) Hmm, tips.  I measure all of my food (a food scale was the single greatest investment that I have) and I religiously track everything, even if it’s one single tootsie roll.  Some advice that I heard (but don’t follow often because it’s too difficult) is to eat “like a king for breakfast, a commoner for lunch, and a pauper for dinner” – i.e., have your biggest meal for breakfast and gradually get smaller.  What works for me, though, is a bunch fo small meals. I eat about 200 calories every 2-3 hours of nutritious, protein-rich food (cottage cheese, nonfat plain greek yogurt, cheese, and throw some fresh fruit or veggies in for taste!)

@mrstilly:  How many calories do you eat when you are trying to lose weight?

1600, and that’s my “never go over it” number, doesn’t necessarily mean I eat that much if I don’t have to.

Do you eat the calories that you burn with exercise?

No, never ever. A “normal” day for me I burn at least 1000 more calories than I consume.

Any other tips or advice to help me lost the last of the weight?

Never eat after a certain time of day – set the number for yourself. I do 6PM, some others prefer 7PM. A doctor told me recently that I have to drink liquids other than water to get more sodium in my diet – now I drink those fruit with veggie juices. Keeps my blood pressure stable and my blood sugar in a normal range.

How many calories do you eat when you are trying to lose weight?

I do My Fitness Pal too and I’m at 1560.

Do you eat the calories that you burn with exercise?

Depends on the day.  If I’m going out for drinks on the weekends, I do a really long workout to “cover” the calories in advance.  But I don’t always eat them back on an everyday basis.

Any other tips or advice to help me lost the last of the weight?

I’m still in the process, but I’d say running and weightlifting are my best tips.  IMO, there’s just no exercise like running in terms of really working up a sweat and getting a full-body workout.  I eat fresh food wherever possible, and avoid stuff out of boxes and mixes.  I cook dinner at home 6-7 times a week, and bring my lunch every day.  I drink TONS of water.

ETA: I’m totally guilty of the eating later at night thing.  I work until 5:30-6 and then hit the gym after work.  My husband and I typically don’t eat until 8-9 at night.

How many calories do you eat when you are trying to lose weight?

I’m also on myfitnesspal! I am set to eat 1320 calories.

Do you eat the calories that you burn with exercise?

Sometimes. During the week I usually don’t because my day is very routine with work, etc. But on the weekends I usually splurge. Sometimes I eat half or more. This weekend I will eat more, because we are having a special date night ๐Ÿ™‚

Any other tips or advice to help me lost the last of the weight?

I plan everything in advance. We food shop on the weekend and plan our meals for the week. We bring our lunch everyday to work and eat breakfast before we leave in the morning. It’s healthier than eating out all the time, and saves us a lot of money.

My other tip is trying new recipes. We don’t eat lettuce and brown rice everyday-we eat really filling meals and Im consistently losing! Last night was spinach lasagna roll ups, and tonight is homemade lentil and chicken soup ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m a HUGE fan of http://www.skinnytaste.com All her recipes (that Ive tried at least) are in fitness pal so it’s super easy to track everything ๐Ÿ™‚

900-1000 seems WAY too low to me – I’ve always heard from nutritionists and other health experts 1200 is the lowest you should go (after exercise).

How many calories do you eat when you are trying to lose weight? I was using the “lose 2 lb. a week” goal on MFP up until this month which had me at 1345, but I’ve been so much hungrier lately that I bumped myself down to the 1.5/week goal which gives me 1650 to work with. I’m not always reaching that, but I always ensure that after exercise calories I’m at least 1200 every day.

Do you eat the calories that you burn with exercise? ABSOLUTELY! You need to ensure you give your body proper nutrition, and if you eat 1,200 calories then burn 700, you’re only feeding your body 500 calories in a day, which is not enough for it to do any of the fat burning or muscle development you want it to.

Since you’re using MFP, I can tell you that the calculations set by MFP help you lose weight without exercise. They’re already cutting calories from your BMR so that if you didn’t workout one bit, you’d lose – so any exercise you do on top of that is also cutting out calories. Even if you don’t eat all of it back, try to get at least half (when I do my 900+ calorie Zumba workouts, I usually only eat 500 of it back).

Any other tips or advice to help me lost the last of the weight?

Make sure you’re eating enough. That’s really, really important and often when you aren’t losing weight it’s because you’re not eating enough. Also be sure to eat something high in protein before and after your workout so you can build muscle.

And make sure you’re getting enough water. I try to sip throughout the day and get at least 60-80 ounces and it helps so much. I definitely notice a lag in my energy for workouts when I haven’t had enough water.

Dug up a couple of threads from MFP’s forums on exercise calories that might help you out, I know they helped me when I was starting ๐Ÿ™‚

Another way to ensure you’re eating enough if you don’t want to eat after exercise is to plan for the day and eat a bigger breakfast/lunch. On my cardio days, I generally increase my breakfast from 250-300 to 450-500 calories to give myself an extra boost.

How many calories do you eat when you are trying to lose weight? I am on My Fitness Pal and I get 1200 calories a day, unless I work out.

Do you eat the calories that you burn with exercise? Maybe not all, but most of them. Sometimes I only work out so I can eat more!

Any other tips or advice to help me lost the last of the weight? I read a very interesting article on Heidi Montag (say what you will about her, at one time she had a banging body). The article is written by a personal trainer (not hers) who breaks down exactly what she does and how it works. Anyways, he says she does weight lifting, but very basic arm stuff- curls and such. What he says is really helping is the various squat and lunge exercises she does. He estimated that 95% of her results are coming from the squats and lunges. I thought that was pretty interesting. Anyways, he also said she eats lean protein and veggies every meal and does not drink (that surprised me). I love having scrambled egg whites for breakfast because it’s high in protein, low in carbs, calories and sugar, and I am usually fuller than when I eat cereal. Also, if you’re on a high protein diet, you need to make sure you are getting enough water.

I’ve always wondered about eating back the calories you lose from exercising.  Good to know.  Thanks!

@MissCalifornia:  I agree about 1200 calories being the minimum, and that’s not the minimum you shoudl consume, but the minimum you should be left with after you’ve subtracted your exercise. So if you burn 1000 calories by running 9 or 10 miles, you need to eat at least 2200.

@Bostongrl25:  I’m a skinnytaste.com fan too! Everything I’ve made (probably 20 recipes or so) have been AMAZING!

OP:

How many calories do you eat when you are trying to lose weight? I eat 1200 cals on MFP. My goal is to lose 1.5 lbs/wk so that’s the amount it gave me. Sometimes I eat a tad more or a tad less (or right at). It just depends on the day.

Do you eat the calories that you burn with exercise? Sometimes. Most of the times, I work out before bed, so I don’t eat after I exercise. However, if I’ve worked out and am hungry after, I’ll eat a bowl of cereal or some fruit.

Any other tips or advice to help me lost the last of the weight? Drink lots of water. Water helps flush out the fat !

@mrsSonthebeach:  I agree with you — but just want to point out if you look at the links jocember posted, that’s a hugely contested issue on My Fitness Pal.  A lot of people swear by not eating back calories they burn (I don’t get how they aren’t completely starving all the time, though).
