- Wedding: March 2014
My wonderful boyfriend and I were talking weddings and getting married last night and he brought up that he really doesn’t want a traditional wedding — he wants to go to a foreign locale, just the two of us, and get married on the beach. I love Boyfriend or Best Friend dearly and being married to him is more important than the wedding BUT I have always wanted a wedding to celebrate my love with family and friends, wear the big white dress, get professional photos, etc. etc. Not to mention, I think my parents — especially my mom — would be crushed if they didn’t get to plan a wedding. Boyfriend or Best Friend thinks its a waste of money and I understand the sentiment. Obviously this is just a first conversation but he told me he’d do whatever to make me happy but that he’s pretty serious about his dream about getting married on the beach, just the two of us…
He also was talking about how “girls want diamonds that african kids had to die for” I told him that I didn’t necessarily want a diamond…I LOVE saphires…but I do want a ring.
I feel guilty and selfish and like I’ve bought way too into cultural norms and expectations too much of the engagement ring and the white wedding.
Anyone else in a similar siuation? I love my Boyfriend or Best Friend more than anything and above all else want him, but is it wrong to want a wedding and an engagement ring, too? Sigh.
