@missmichigan: It just depends on how many guest are coming in from out of town. Do you have more than 20 families coming from out of town??

Will they all need hotel rooms?? If so, then I think you would need more than 20 rooms, unless people wouldnt mind sharing!

How many of your guest do you expect would want to have a place to stay the night?

For us for an hour we would just drive home the same night and not pay for a hotel.

@missmichigan: Most hotels (at least in my area) don’t require anything on your part really to block rooms, and then if they aren’t book by a certain time (usually 2 weeks before) they open the rooms up to the public. I’d try and get a couple more blocked and the worst-case is they aren’t used up and the hotel frees them up.

I would wait and see if they fill up and then if you can block more.  But for us, staying the night for a wedding an hour away would depend how close we are to the couple. An hour isn’t that far.

If its only an hour away then I doubt that you even need hotel rooms for them. One hour drive is not that far imo

I would not stay in a hotel if I only lived an hour away.

@missmichigan: It’s always a nice courtesy to have a room block, but simply providing a list of hotels would also work. Emphasizing that they should reserve early is also important.

Do you get a refund if you don’t use up all the rooms? If you lose money, I wouldn’t do it.
