I think a floral centerpiece in purple or pink would look nice.  or a tiffany blue vase?

What about updating those curtains to something more colorful like fuschia?

Also, can you slip cover the chairs? A bold striped or graphic pattern would freshen them up.

I also agree about changing the curtains to something lighter/brighter. Also, you can add some colorful artwork on the walls on either side of the doorway.

love the light fixture by the way!

I guess my theory of decorating is that it’s not doing much good if it makes you bored, sad, frustrated, etc… Can you use the curtains somewhere else? Also, ikea has some really cheap curtains, so maybe he would spring for that? If not, I would put some fun prints in white frames on the walls to tie in to the kitchen cabinets. Also a big flower arrangement in a white vase on the table. plus a light sisal or brighter rug to play against the plain chairs and dark table.

I agree that the curtains seem a little too heavy for the space.  They should be pushed back so they don’t cover up your lovely window, and a lighter curtain with a touch of color like a ribbon trim would add some interest.  If your husband won’t let you buy new ones, think about sewing.  It isn’t hard at all to sew curtains.  A colorful rug would go a long way in adding color and an interesting graphic runner on the table might look nice.  It doesn’t look like you have room, but chairs at the head and foot of the table in a different color and texture would be nice as well.  I don’t know if next to the window is a best place for a mirror in this room.  A mirror should be put where it reflects something beautiful.  Perhaps a mirror on the opposite wall reflecting your window and table and chandelier would be nice and also reflect some additional light into the room which seems to be lacking.

I actually really like all of it.  Gosh, what a beautiful dining room!

What about adding a bright rug?  Like a light green or yellow?

Is the furniture black or brown? The floors? The walls? My initial thoughts would be to use black in there..square shades on the chandelier, prints in black frames flanking the windows, a patterned carpet underneath, but it depends on how much floor space you have and where a rug would end.

I’d also get a large crystal vase and fill it with fresh flowers and change it out weekly before doing anything more colorful. One of the floral colors might just make the room or inspire you, and suddenly you’d have your accent color!

@AnnieAAA:  I love your table and chairs!  Can you tell me where you got them?  I would suggest perhaps doing a darker grey paint with a stencil or even putting in some wainscotting – pinterest has some amazing DIY’s.  That would give it a little depth on the walls.

I think the room is beautiful! I love the idea of purple accents…photos on the wall with hints of purple, purple centerpiece, maybe even purple material to pull back the curtains to showcase the beautiful window.
