I’m in my 40s and my mother is in her 70s. When I got married, even my widowed grandmothers (now deceased, but they were born about 1910) went as “Mrs. Jane Smith”. My mother (probably the age of the widowed guests you’re thinking of) has in the past said how offended she is to read of a woman being called “Mrs. John Smith”.

What I’m saying is that “Mrs. Jane Smith” is safe and will offend no one. “Mrs. John Smith” has a good chance of offending some women.

Gee, I guess Annie doesnt have any divorced friends.  Eitquette is meant to help people feel comfortable.  She fails.
