- Wedding: June 2013
Hive, I need help. I think I’m going to have an anxiety attack 🙁 After a visit to the mall earlier today, Fiance and I decided to visit Zales to check out men’s wedding bands. I’d expected to pay between 200-400 dollars for a nice band, and I was totally shocked when he pretty much dismissed the traditional yellow gold bands he originally thought he wanted, and continually picked up the titantium and tungsten ones. He finally chose a titanium one, and it was $99! Which was great, until I picked it up. It was unbelievably flimsy feeling, even though it was the same width as his hefty tungsten e-ring. I hated it! I kept my feelings to myself at first, but it just seemed so cheap feeling. We were about to buy it right then, but I still felt like it wasnt enough. The saleswoman suggested we buy it, and I could buy him a nice watch, or use it towards the wedding. Then I suggested we buy this ring, but have him use it for work (he’s in civil engineering) and he pick a nicer one, since the longer we talked the more he kept eyeing the cabinet again….
Well Lord, dont I wish I could eat my words. He agrees to take another look, and promptly falls in love with a $750 white gold ring! It was beautiful, and I loved it before I saw the price. I’m in sticker shock, unable to say no, not really saying much of anything, and the woman starts ringing it up! Before we know it, she’s convinced us into a protection plan for another $120! I mean, It makes sense to protect such an investment, but even with the 10% discount, it ended up being $846. I finally admitted I couldn’t afford it by the time it comes in from special order in a month, then the peppy saleslady says we can add it to his Zales Credit Card with 6 month no interest. He immediately agrees, but I’m still feeling like I’m about to throw up.
I have the receipt in my purse, but I’m freaking out. I dont know how to break it to him that I can’t afford this ring. Its my fault for being unsatisfied by the $99 titanium ring, but I didnt expect him to jump to the other end of the spectrum, and pick one of the most expensive men’s rings they have. Plus, it’s only 200 dollars less than my HALF CARAT diamond ring, and he had a whole year to pay it off. Plus, if I fail to pay for it within the 6 month interest free period, there’s a 27% interest rate on it on HIS credit card. I’m absolutely beside myself with worry and stress with having to tell him we might have to cancel the order, which we have 21 days to do. I dont make a whole lot of money, and I had intended on using the last little bit of my student loan for this semester to buy a cheapo laptop so I can stop using his all the time. :/
What would you do? I’m freaking out, and my mom is out of town so I can’t even call her for advice.
