I’ve tried several times to make a birdcage veil but I just can’t seem to get it to lay right.
I’m scared to purchase one – in case it’s just the style to be a puffy as it is?
Any tips or suggestions?

I’m wearing a birdcage veil as well!
If the veil isn’t laying the way you want it to, you can bobby pin it into place. I recommend shaping and pinning it on the back of your head, so the front will lay nicely and not look too flat.
I bought my veil from Somethingbold.com. Good luck and great choice! 🙂
Keep playing with it. I got quite frustrated, put it aside a couple times and came back to it. After a few days, voila, I figured it out. No rhyme, no reason.
i think they are tricky too!! my aunt made mine and she said that steaming really did the trick…but i also think a lot of bobby pins and fooling around with it is what makes it work!!
Glad that i’m not alone.
I’m going to have my hair in a low bun- and I want the veil to come from the top of the bun to the mid-forehead (apparently called a flapper veil). will be adding feather/flower fascinator either with the veil or in lieu of the veil after the ceremony.
(I like how short the birdcage is in the first picture- but it’s sort of like a cap/hat. I like how the birdcage comes from the back in the second pictures- but it’s too short)
steaming sounds interesting – did you do it on a form or on a board (certainly not in place)!

I have been contemplating making my own birdcage veil as well and read a post on here… and can’t seem to find it…grr…but a Bee had recommened using french netting vs. russian netting because the french netting isn’t as stiff so you can play around with it more. Also I did save a recommended site for DIY birdcage veils:

Good Luck, I’d love to see your finished product!
here’s the feather fascinator that i already have – but i’m not in love with.

So… i just so happens that near where I work (or at least the office where I work 2 days/week)… used to be the UK Millinery Capitol (something to do with reed farms nearby). Well on my lunch break… guess where I went… the nearest millinery store.
I played around with lots of fun feathers, veiling, etc….
2 things I’ve learned:
There is a HUGE difference between French & Russian net. French is smaller and much less stuff. Russian has larger holes and is very stiff. Pic below- french on right. russian on left. The softness of french net makes is 1000% easier to work it. It lays flat, it flows nicely, and feels much nicer next to the skin. Pics below is less than 5 mins of srunching & pinning.
Try…. try…. try. Remember that fascinator I didn’t like above? Well- add a silk flower to it and viola! (although I still think I need to add some more feathers to "9" & "2" oclock.
Suggestions welcome.
trying to imbed pics…

Wow, that looks AMAZING! Fantastic job! 🙂
Thanks – and I forgot to warn everyone that I have no makeup on & had a very rough day. Somehow actually making something (not just spreadsheets) is really satisfying. May have to break out the crochet hook tonight!
