Oh, phew…deep breaths…
TLDR: I’m doing my own hair, and I generally suck at hair. Need help.
The Beefy Version:
Fiance and I had some unexpected financial challenges arise this year, of course AFTER we’d already confirmed and down-paymented all our vendors. We talked about the practicality of cancelling/postponing, but it would have cost us more money to do that and try and put on something later than to just continue with our plans.
Fast forward to now…I’ve been trying to find someone that can do my hair for a reasonable price, and it’s been SO frustrating. I’m both super picky and having to be extremely budget conscious, so I’m having a hard time. I was talking about the issue with my bridesmaids and running the costs by them (they’re all from Canada, so they’d also be dealing with a big hike after the exchange), and one of them suggested doing it ourselves. We’re already doing our own makeup, so in a burst of near hysterical optimism, I said let’s do it!
Over the next several days, the gravity of that decision is really sinking in. Bees, I suck at hair. I wear my hair two ways…down, and up in a bun. Sometimes I get wild and put it in a ponytail. My “styling” of choice is wash and wear. I can get by with a blow dryer and curling iron if I want to be fancy, but it’s always a little touch and go how it’ll turn out. I don’t really understand hair product.
What do I do?? I asked my Fiance if he thought it would be terrible of me to go get mine done alone and let the girls fend for themselves (I imagine finding an appointment for 1 will be easier than one for 7), and he seemed iffy on it. I don’t want to be horrible and selfish, so I don’t know. 🙁 (Not suggesting I abandon them…I would talk to them first.)
Have any of you successfully done your own wedding hair? Should I just start practising like crazy? Anyone have any secret and magical tricks they’re willing to share?

I think its fine to go by yourself but it sounds like it might be worth it to just get it done professionally, even if its just a nice blowout! I’d fine a place that does mostly style work (there are salons that just do blowouts, updos, etc) and invite the girls but also make it clear that they can still do it themselves if they want!

Are any of the bridesmaids good at doing hair? Maybe they can help you.

If any of your bridesmaids are good at doing hair, I’d go with them! If not, honestly, DON’T do it yourself. I am not big on hair or makeup (just wanted a natural, simple look) but I’m wash and go, like you, and I barely use product. I splurged on a professional and I have zero regrets. It barely moved all night and looks great in the photos. Maybe you could find a student who would do it for less, or shop around at different hair stylists. It’s not an expense I regret. Then again, my mom did her own hair for her wedding and looked fucking gorgeous, but I do think it depends on your comfort doing your own hair and whether you like how it usually turns out.

Are you in a city with a Blo or a Dry Bar? If so, you could get a simple blow out for like $45.
Otherwise, you could do something really simple at a salon for less than $100.

that’s more or less what I was thinking of doing…the trouble with having everyone come with me is I feel like it’s unlikely they’ll be able to handle seven walk-ins at once, and if I try and make an appointment then we’re getting into the Wedding Party zone, if you know what I mean.
Unfortunately, no. 🙁 We’re all pretty low maintenance on the day to day. That works fine overall because I don’t want any crazy updos or anything like that. Definitely a good suggestion, though! I’ve been wracking my brains trying to think of someone I could ask!
Ahh, see, I’m pretty sure that’s how I’ll feel too. Honestly, I doubt if my BMs would care if I went alone (other than just missing out on the party!), but I feel like insisting on going makes me seem super vain and borderline bridezilla. No? sigh…my poor Fiance and his “ehhh” did NOT help! :-p
I looked at Dry Bar, and nothing here (Troy, Michigan), but I’ve never heard of Blo, so I’ll look that up!

Okay wow, you are seriously my hero right now! There is a Blo salon just 15 minutes from the place we’re getting ready, AND they had availability, AND they’re very affordable! Sweet relief. Seriously, I’m giddy right now. haha
They even said they can accommodate all of us if we want, so I’m revisiting the issue with my girls. 🙂 Thank you!!

That is SO awesome! I’m so glad you’ve got an option 🙂
