Me and h2b were thinking about having a DIY cupcake bar instead of a desert at our wedding breakfast but h2b has decided this is mildly tacky and should be done in the evening reception. However, I really like the idea! Also I was thinking we could have seperate cupcake stands on each table so people don’t have to get up and also means we dont have to do centrepieces. What does everybody think?

I like the idea of having cupcake centerpieces, but if that’s the case I think they should be already made/decorated. If people are DIY-ing at their own tables, set-up would be complicated and things could get messy.

Yes to centerpieces, no to DIY. Too messy for people who are all dressed up.

What if we were to pre ice them? Takes away the messy side and people can still pick and mix their toppings so they get what they want?

How dare you consider nay-ing a cupcake bar? I would go nuts for that at a wedding.
I think if they were pre-iced, it would prevent any mishaps 🙂

Haha see I really love the idea! And I wanted to make them all myself so they have a personal touch 🙂 But yes pre iced would probably be better. AND it would keep the kids happy (there will be lots of kids -.- )

What about a DIY Crepe bar? You can get all the sweet of a cupcake as well as multiple toppings to choose from 🙂

Sometimes I think people go overboard with DIY “bars”. This is one of those times. I’d be very confused if I was expected to decorate cupcakes at a wedding. Like what is this, a craft class?

I really love the idea if they’re pre-iced. We used to have a decorate your own cupcake bar at my elementary school’s family fun night and it was awesome (: I would be really excited to see something similar at a wedding!

I would say definitely not as the centerpiece, and personally, I’m not a fan of having to make my own dessert. It wouldn’t be as bad if it were pre-iced, but even then, I’d be a little confused.

I think it’s a fun idea but in my experience toppings don’t stick well to icing that’s been sitting out for as long as I think this icing would. The icing tends to get a dried “crust” and then the toppings rolls right off. I suspect it would be a huge mess.

I don’t know about having toppings for them but I am all for cupcake centerpieces!!

Even pre-iced, they’re going to make a mess, and if you use toppings like nuts or chocolate chips, there’s a chance that the stray bits end up on the table. If someone sets a drink on a stray chocolate chip, there’s a good chance the drink will tip over (seen this happen many times with table jewels/those little plastic fake gems you spread on the tables for some sparkle. I used to work in a restaurant that did a ton of weddings and whenever we saw the table gems coming out, we’d stock extra tablecloths).
I’d also be concerned that having cupcakes on tables prior to dinner would be too much temptation for folks to nibble at them, leaving nothing for dessert after.
Maybe a homemade muffin display that could be done in lieu of a bread basket and could double as a centerpeice?
