For all those bees who can’t afford professional cleaning, don’t want to pay the super high fee, or who were told the chemicals used by pro cleaners would ruin the dress beading (as I was told), this post is for you!
My method was super simple and super effective! (And I had waited a whole 2 months after my wedding before attempting this.)
My mother recommended the method and says her mother does the same thing with tough stains.
All I needed:
– a bucket
– Dawn dish soap
– a clean, soft bristle toothbrush
– warm water
I hung my dress behind a door and let the bottom of it hang in a bucket of warm soapy water. I agitated the water a bunch and moved the fabric around in it to remove a bunch of the easy-to-remove dirt. I then got to work with the toothbrush and more soap on the tougher and more deep-set stains. I found working in a circular motion with the brush worked best.
I changed the water twice, repeated the process and rinsed. I also spot treated some areas higher on the dress as well as my straps using the same materials. I had some BLACK stains on my dress and a lot of dirt along the hem. Everything except 1 particularly stubborn stain is completely clean now – and that one stain is barely even visible.
“A drop of Dawn and the grease is gone” indeed!
