I’d try it. There doesn’t seem to be a downside. Worst case you don’t like them.

We did! Neither of us are professional or even amateur photographers but we borrowed my Father-In-Law nice camera and went and took some pictures ourselves. We didn’t get 100s of amazing shots but we ago a few we really loved and we had an absolute blast doing it.

We had our professional engagement photos done a couple weeks ago (they’re included in our photographer’s package) but I wanted some autumn photos done now that the leaves in our area have changed, so we went out with a friend who likes taking photos, and my fiance’s fancy camera with an expensive portrait lens.  To be honest, we only got two shots out of the hour or so that we liked (though my fiance is very picky, and sensitive about how he looks in photos) but it was still fun, and like bibliophilacticbee said it can’t hurt to try!  If nothing else, it gets you a little more comfortable in front of the camera (I hate getting my photo taken) and you can experiment with different poses, and even facial expressions (like in America’s Next Top Model where Tyra would tell the girls to smize haha).  Though I would recommend, if the price is reasonable, getting a session with your photographer, so you get a bit of a rehearsal for the wedding day photos and if there are things you don’t like in the photos you can discuss with him/her and change it for the wedding.

I think for sure you can do them on your own!  If your friend knows a little something about photography, then that definitely helps (adjusting iso, shutter speed, aperture, etc..).  You can also do a lot of editing afterwards on Adobe, if you’re savvy with that.

Truthfully, you only need a handful of nice shots.

With that being said, I know many couples prefer to have engagement shoots with the wedding photographer, because it’s a way to ‘break the ice’ before the big day.  I hear that you spend sometimes more time with the photographer than your future spouse, haha..

Oh, and you may want to double check on the resolution of the images if you go down the DIY path, if you and FH are considering large portraits to be printed.

Just echoing PP’s, there’s no harm in trying! Especially if you’re familiar with cameras and have a higher end one, they could turn out really nicely and save you a good chunk of change. If they don’t turn out the way you want, no harm, just hire a professional then. I say go for it!
