I just completed a mock-up of my DIY wedding favors. I wasn’t even gonna do favors in the first place, but the DIY bug struck again! I am in love with the mockup and can’t wait to make the real things. It’s a CD of our favorite songs that we want to share with our guests… each guest gets one to take home.
Question: has anyone done their own CDs, and do you recommend CD-R or CD-RW? Does it matter?
Thanks in advance…

I think RWs are a little more expensive, but I haven’t looked into prices yet. We are planning to do CD favors. RW just means you can edit the disc after stuff is saved on it (RW stands for re-writable, I think). I always used RWs in college to transfer documents and such….cause we didn’t have flash drives then haha.
Rs are one and done…and I think cheaper, but again, I haven’t looked recently. This is all based on my college memories.
what songs are you including? care to share? I put my Fiance in charge of our list, cause he is the one who really wants to do it, but I need to throw him some suggestions so that it’s not bob dylan only.

@lisaberry – hi!
actually, not to be a total party pooper, but i think we’ve decided to nix this idea after all. i’m reaaaaaaaaally bummed because i already had all the stuff to make the CDs and now i have to return it all
we’re nixing it because we’ve realized that it’s actually not legal to make bulk copies of CDs, even though we’re not trying to sell it. it’s only a slight risk we’d get caught, but we’d rather keep a clear conscience. and we don’t want any of our guests wondering “is this music legal? is it wrong if i listen to it?”
we figured we’d avoid that issue altogether.
sigh. i hate to give up this project but we want to do what we think is right. 🙁

I recommend CD-R’s for several reasons:
1. They are not re-writeable (CD-RW is). You burn them once and it’s permanent. You wouldn’t want your guests writing over the CD’s you made for them!
2. They’re cheaper than CD-RW.
3. CD-R is actually more compatible with CD players. There are a few older CD players out there that wouldn’t be able to read a CD-RW.
You should see if you can get a big box of empty jewel cases, and print up some customer cover art with your picture or something, and print the song list on the back of the cover. That would be really cute. 🙂

@jenbrandner – i had already done a mockup of our covers… they were going to be SO.DARN.CUTE. our picture/names on the front and the song list on the back. sad to give up this project!

Oh bummer – just read your update. I’m kinda surprised actually, because I’ve heard of people using CD’s as favors before.

i know, right! i’ve seen them too and never thought twice about it. however, after reading through the RIAA law, it’s just not legal.
