Is anyone else considering doing their flowers themselves? There are very few reliable sources for flowers. I think it would be helpful to start a list of locations. Here is what I have come up with so far:
crate and barrel (I do not know their prices, but the have an onsite florist)
farmers markets (starting in May)
•Tuesday at federal plaza ( Dearborn and Adams),
•Thursdays at Daley plaza ( Clark and Washington),
•Saturday mornings at Nettlehurst school (halsted and Melrose) which is small
•green City Market at the south end of Lincoln park on Wednesday and Saturdays. This one or the Daley plaza one are probably the best bet.
Any other additions?

I did my flowers myself but used fiftyflowers.com. I talked to the growers at the markets and peonies were very sketchy for that time. They wouldn’t know till the week of if they would have any. Had to go with security over local.

@baletrina: how was the quality of the flowers? Did you have any trouble with delivery? I also heard that flowers that come unbloomed (if that’s a word) sometimes don’t bloom in time for the wedding.

@maenadinchicago: Quality was amazing. They provide specific instructions on how to ensure your flowers are perfect for the wedding. My wedding was on Sunday and I had my flowers delivered on Friday. I will warn you that it is a TON of work to prep the flowers and arrange them yourself but I paid $600 total for my flowers that would of cost me $6000+ if I had gone to a florist. Flowers separated into buckets day of arrival. I used sweet pea, tulips, garden roses and Sarah Bernhardt peoniesSome of the small arrangements after arranging them Friday night after the rehearsal dinner. Roses were still tight but everything else was opening nicely. I grouped 4 of these on a rectangular table.

I DIY’d my wedding flowers and was THRILLED with the results……..originally I looked at Fifty Flowers and Sams, but didnt’ want to buy an entire box of everything because I wanted a lot of variation.
So…I ended up going with Flower Moxie (http://www.flowermoxie.com) and was thrilled! I heard about them thru a friend on Facebook. My favorite part was they will sell by the bunch, which no one else does, instead of having to buy an ENTIRE box.
Basically, they helped me figure out exactally what I needed once I have them the quantity and vase sizes. I was nervous, but they were spot-on, I only had about two vase fulls extra. They sent instructions, tools, and they have a lot of DIY videos on youtube. I was thrilled with the outcome!
Hope that helps, good luck!!!
Oh, I spend well under $1,000. My florist quotes were averaging $3,200-4000

Chells81: I’ve been considering going to Pike Place Market for my flowers, but have heard horror stories about them not looking how I want them. Flower Moxie looks like a great place to save money and get exactly what I’m looking for. Thank you!
