After checking out several posts here on Weddingbee, I’ve just ordered the supplies to make 50 battery-operated paper lanterns to string from the ceiling at our reception location. The picture below shows the effect I’m looking for, and details on how I’m doing it are here. The only remaining question is whether this means I’m certifiably insane?

YES! lol. Just kidding. Honestly, i think each one of is at least a little insane for attempting to plan our own weddings. . .never mind the super DIYers. Dont worry though. . .lol. . .i am doing practically EVERYTHING by myself.

I think we are all a little crazy, I’m doing the same thing. Although I’ve ordered around 120 –

I’m going to be attempting the same thing ๐ I’d rather be crazy than spend the the huge price tag for our tent rental company to hang lanterns.

I might have you beat – I am making my own drum lamps and then we’re hanging them ourselves…certifiable.

BUT SOOO PRETTY! I don’t know if our venue will let us hang things from the ceiling, but if they will I’m thinking about doing somrthing similar!

Miss Starlet, we won’t actually be hanging ours from the ceiling. Here is a picture of our venue with Christmas lights strung up in it. We’re planning to run monofilament line between each of the attachment points previously used for the Christmas lights, and then hang the lanterns from the monofilament line.
cosmos31, we will be stringing ours up ourselves, too. Fortunately, I think we’re going to have a key to the venue a day or two beforehand, so that we can get everything set up.

You are not insane! What is insane is the price that rental companies try to charge you for lighting! We did 130 paper lanterns lit by DIY throwies and the effect was gorgeous ๐
It does take forever though. You’ll have to remind yourself how much money you are saving A LOT.
Good luck!

tiramisu, I believe I already credited you as my inspiration on this one! I noticed that you used 3-4 throwies in each of yours. How did you decide on that number? We’ve ordered the makings for 6 throwies per lantern, hoping to increase the glow, but I’m not sure whether that will be too much?

hi 2dbride! we planned on using 3, as with some trial and error found that that gave the best glow… but with time running out we ended up with not quite enough and actually used 2 in a lot of the lanterns. it looked better with 3 though! I’m sure 6 would give quite a nice glow!

My jaw is on the floor… that is A LOT of work. You aren’t insane– you’re just ensuring that your venue is going to look fabulous!
Oh yay you’re going to get keys to the venue the night before? That makes it a lot less stressful! Its going to look so awesome ๐

For some reason, the picture of the venue with the Christmas lights didn’t come through. Let me try again.

I got the paper lanterns today, and put one of them together with the 6 LED lights. Here is a picture, using 3 red LEDs and 3 white ones. I think this is going to work! [attachment=239560,26110]
