Hello all! I am doing my own makeup for my wedding in May; partially because I don’t normally wear much and don’t want to look overly made-up, and also because I’m using the wedding as an opportunity to learn more about makeup in general! Please let me know what needs improvement overall/specifically.
A few notes:
– I’m not looking for a super-glamarous look with contouring, fake eyelashes, etc. That’s just not my style and I think there’s way too much room for error 🙂
– I’m not wearing eyeliner because A) I don’t have any right now (it just ran out) and B) I’m not sure if I want such a dark eye look. But I’m not sure so please let me know what you think!
– I need to get some all-over face primer, eyelid primer, setting powder and/or setting spray. Please recommend if you have favorites!

I think it looks really good! This is the same kind of makeup look I’m wanting for my wedding to, very natural and light! 🙂 I would say maybe a small amount of a brown eyeliner would look really good with that look, giving some definition to your eyes without being as dark or harsh as black eyeliner; you could even use some brown eyeshadow around the area instead of eyeliner so it’s a bit softer!
I also think a touch of rose color on the cheeks would look very cute and appropriate for a wedding! Other than that I think this is a gorgeous look!!

I second the brown eyeliner look! I love this look it’s so fresh. You have lovely eyes!

I think it’s lovely. Your lash line is naturally dark so I don’t think you need liner. I’d add a little bit of blush

Thanks so much, all! I’m wearing some rosy blush, but apparently not enough 😉 Will add more and experiment with a little bit of brown eyeliner.

I used to be a professional MUA for film/tv/print – and I wrote this for bees who are doing their own make up, it might be useful for you.
Tips and thoughts from a professional MUA for DYI brides
My big thing is to lighten the area under the eye for photographs. You would be amazed what this does. Never ever skip this step. I talk about how to apply eyeliner etc so it’s not a harsh line and why it’s not always great to do a dark line under the eyes, esp if you’re having video shot, which if not lit properly (and a wedding venue is almost never lit properly), will make undereye area appear dark and not pretty.
youre so pretty, and I personally like a lighter look for brides. You need a clean slate, that is a good foundation but not a heavy one, it shouldn’t read like caked on foundation and we should see some of your freckles.
I would try a little more of a peachy nude color on the lips to play up your gorgeous green eyes. The eye shadow could be slightly lilac, purple taupe color.
here’s an example of the combo I think would be pretty on you:

My only feedback would be watch how pink your lip colour is. Youre wearing grey in the pictures, against ivory or white (if that’s what you’re wearing) that pink you have on may look pinkier or too pink with the contrast of all white/ivory. I feel like the pink you have on may turn out a lot brighter when you’re in your dress. Maybe go for a peachy nude as PP suggested?
Another tip: if you aren’t used to wearing liquid eyeliner, stay with pencil and stay away from liquid, it will give you harsher lines than you are probably looking for.
As far as primers so I absolutely adore the sephora brand primer but am using covergirl trublend primer at the moment because I have the trublend makeup and I find it does the job adequately as well. The sephora brand eyeshadow primer is also amazing but be cautious when applying eyeshadow as it HOLDS eyeshadow and it may come out darker
I adore the way you did your eyeshadow, it’s lovely and I wouldn’t change that.

I use and recommend:
Geurlain’s L’or pure radiance primer
Urban Decay’s all nighter makeup setting spray

Be sure to go take pics in all kinds of lighting. Outside in direct light and indirect light, indoors, indoors by window, cloudy, sunny, nighttime. And also take pics after you’ve been wearing your makeup all day and sweating in it. Make sure to truly, truly test it.

It looks like a good start, but looks very “basic”. If this is the look you’re going for, then it’ll be fine!! I would recommend more/darker blush, a little highlighter, and to do a little bit more with the eyeshadow. Right now it looks like you’ve been wearing it all day and it’s coming off.

You look really pretty!!! Your eyes are insanely gorgeous! Your dark lashes naturally frame your eyes! Built in eyeliner 🙂 I agree that you could blot off a little of the lipstick if you find it overpowering once yyou are in white/ivory. I agree that a tiny bit more of a rose hue to your cheeks would look nice and I think the comment about a little concealer under eye will brighten you up for photos is totally spot on.

Another thing you could do for eyeliner is to actually use a brown matte eyeshadow; lightly and precisely line your bottom lid. It will define your eye without being harsh.
And just keep practing, practicing! And take photos every single time. It will help you determine how much makeup you’ll need to put on to show in photographs without having to go overboard.
You can’t go wrong with Too Faced Shadow Insurance for an eyelid primer. I also really love Make Up For Ever’s step 1 face primer.

I have to agree with the bees who commented on the lip colour. The colour doesn’t match the eye makeup or your skin tone, it comes off a bit too pink & too harsh.
I’d go with a dusty rose tinted nude-ish lip, like Bite Beauty in Pepper (I have that one and it’s great, lighter than it looks in the pic)
You are a great natural beauty though, regardless of what colour you go with!

Hi Bee! I am a lawyer too and a makeup junkie! You look great if you’re looking for a setting powder I love Ben Nye banana powder. I’m African American so you may want to choose a color lighter than banana to complement your skin. I think on of the PP’s mentioned Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray. I’d also recommend getting one of the Naked Palette for shadow as well. I love Lancôme dual finish powder foundation for a light but polished look. They also have a waterproof liner in bronze that would be gorgeous on you!
Best of luck 🙂

My honest take on it, looks like as a pp said you have worn make up all day and it is coming off. The pink lipstick is a huge no, it is to harsh with the look of the eyes and just isn’t right for your skin tone.
