I scheduled a personal beauty consultation tomorrow at Sephora – which is a 90 min session to discuss skincare and makeup, and they do my makeup for me – free with a minimum $125 purchase. I figured I’d probably spend about that much in buying all the makeup anyway – so I’m looking forward to it! Plus, as a bonus, I’ll have my makeup professionally done and can see how it lasts throughout New Year’s Eve night (lots of dancing, sweating, etc. so it’s a good trial!)
I will get recs of course tomorrow from the consultant, but I was hoping to get some “must-have” products that other Bees suggest for DIY makeup.
I’m leaning toward getting MUFE HD foundation, and may get the kit (comes with primer and the finishing powder also). I probably will get some blush, lipstick and I definitely want to get the Urban decay setting spray (I’m going to try the finishing powder vs. spray (does anyone use both?)) I’m combination but can sometimes get very oily in the t-zone.
I’m actually really excited about DIYing the makeup – I bought the Coastel Sets makeup brushes and they’re really nice (but were very reasonable – I think I paid $30 for a whole set of brushes. I’ve been watching tutorials on YouTube and practicing. I should be able to do my makeup so much better after this – which is another bonus
Thanks!

Definitely try a beauty blender, they are $20 and result in a seriously flawless foundation finish in photos 🙂

Definitely get a Beauty Blender (the original one)!! The foundation you’re looking at is great. Get a few samples of a couple different colors that are close to your skin color and test them out in different lighting. Sometimes the store lighting doesn’t give an accurate idea of the color. I love Smashbox primer. I also love Urban Decays Naked Flushed palette. Its a blush, bronzer, and highlighter palette. I’ve also heard great things about Urban Decays All Nightet setting spray. For eyeshadow, I love the Urban Decay Naked palettes. There’s 3 but you can pick whichever one you like best. If you plan to do winged eyeliner, get Maybelline EyeStudio gel liner from any old drug store. It’s awesome. But I would recommend getting an angled eyeliner brush (the one that comes with it stinks).

@blushpinkbride: Thank you – I have a dupe for the beauty blender but may have to get the real thing!
@IzzyBear: Thank you for your tips! I will look for the Naked Flushed palette – that sounds great not having to buy those 3 separately!

@MsYankee: MUFE – you’reon the right track, that stuff is awesome and will last all day!
Nars Deep throat is a great blush
I just got the new Naked2 pallette for christmas and loved it.
DON’T buy the smashbox primer, such a waste of money, I don’t know why everyone is so obsesed with it.

Hmmm –
1. Dior Show Waterproof mascara – stuff ROCKS.
2. Urban Decay all nighter setting spray – I can’t believe i went all my life without this until now 🙂
3. Urban Decay – liquid liner. Tried and purchased recently. Stuff does not budge!!!!
4. I concur with the others on the original beauty blender – it is worth its weight in gold!

@MsYankee: The HD foundation starter kit is great, though I noticed it tends to dry my skin out a little. For blush I use NARS- orgasm, but I’ve used others and any NARS blush is awesome/long lasting. I also love urban decay’s NAKED eyeshadows…

@MsYankee: oh gosh I wish I could remember the name!! I went there to get new, and GOOD, makeup for my engagement photos and they recommended a photo quality foundation and finishing powder. Of course, I didn’t realize until I went back for the concealor that there was a starter kit for less than what I paid for the full size items, but oh well. I’m super happy with it! I just got the previews of my engagement photos and yes they’ve been edited a bit, but wow. Makeup looks great. I got a neutral eye palette there as well that showed up really well in the photos. I now wear it all every day because it goes on so light – I just tone it down a bit compared to what I put on for photos.
ETA: Here you go. Found it all on the website. 🙂 I used Bare Minerals bronzer and blush with it (I already had those), E.L.F.’s primer, the HD Invisible eyelid primer, and then liquid eyeliner and mascara I got at Target (my trusted brands on those ones).

I also recommend MUFE HD. That’s what I bought and used for engagement pictures, and it was great. The setting spray is good too. I really like my Naked palette as well. I recently bought tha Sugar lip exfoliating kit and some tinted gloss, and it’s awesome!

Yay! Date twins! woot!
Anyway, I have SUPER shiny/oily skin, and my absolute favorite thing in the entire world is Tarte Clean Slate Pore Perfecting Primer
I put on an oil-free moisturizer, wait 1 1/2 mins, then the Tarte primer, wait another 1 1/12 mins (just to let it soak in) and then my foundation.
I cannot say enough good things about this primer, honestly. I used to be so embarrassed of my shiny skin, and I’ve tried other brands of primer before that didn’t work out, but this Tarte primer is HEAVEN.

I did this and it turned out well, in the end. After my appointment at Sephora, I went online and looked up all the prodcuts that they used on me. It was over $500. There was just no way I was going to pay for that. So I got on the bee and got recommendations about what needed to be good quality and what could be drug store versions. I ended up getting the concealer and foundation from Sephora and everything else from Target. Total cost about $140. It turned out great and lasted all day.

Anastasia brow pencil/brow shadow, hourglass finishing powder (shade that looks good on you), any naked palette!

The Urban Decay lip liners and lipsticks are amazing, I only have one colour but plan to get more in the future. I also love their pencil eyeliners and there are a ton of colours. I prefer the brush on the MUFE liquid liner over the Urban Decay ones.
And if you like nail polish, the new Formula X ones are incredible! I used to be happy if my nail polish went 12 hours without chipping, but with Sephora’s new basecoat and topcoat it lasts 5 days. There are over 100 colours as well so I think I will not buy any other brand from now on.
