Hey everyone! Just wanted to share a really easy, cheap and fun project! We decided we wanted to do a mason jar sand ceremony set to go with our mason jar trend in our decor. Since this is a popular detail I thought i’d share!
We are doing mason jars in our centerpieces without the lids/rims, so I had a bunch laying around. I knew I wanted to incorporate chalkboards somehow and that I wanted the jars to be labeled “his”, “hers”, and “ours”.
So I got out my wedding crafting supplies and to my delight I didn’t have to purchase a single thing to make these! I took the lid and covered to seal side (the non-metallic side) with chalkboard vinyl (chalkboard paint would also work), and hot glued it into the rim by piping the glue around the depressed edge. I then cut a piece of twine, folded it in half, and glued the folded part (u-shape) to the inside of the rim. I decorated the front with a chalkboard marker. Lastly, I created mini bows with some ribbon we had in our colors (use a thin ribbon, i think this was 1/8th of an inch). I tied a knot in a piece of the ribbon and then folded the ribbon on each side of the knot back behind the knot and hot glued it to the back of the knot to make the appearance of a bow (it is difficult to tie a good looking bow with this short of ribbon). I trimmed the ends, sealed them with a lighter and hot glued the bows to the top of the signs!
The “his” and “hers” will go on pint sized mason jars that we already have and one will hold navy sand and one yellow. the “ours” sign will go onto a quart mason jar that we have to poor our individual sands into during the ceremony.
Hope this helps someone out! There are adorable sets on etsy using mason jars but they run about $30-$40 without shipping for ones with signs hanging like this. I did this set with all leftovers from supplies we purchased for other wedding crafts so it was effectively free but the total estimated cost if you bought the supplies not counting the mason jars would be $2 (chalkboard vinyl) + $1 (chalkboard pen I bought in dollar aisle at Target) + $3 (two colors of ribbon at Michaels with coupon) + $1 (twine also found in dollar aisle at Target) = $7!. The mason jars I didn’t factor in because many people already have them but if you bought them in a 6-pack at walmart I think it’s like 7 dollars (and ace hardware if you have one around even has a 6-pack of pint sized blue ball mason jars for 8 dollars if you are a blue jar person!). You do not need to do a larger quart sized for the middle jar we are just choosing to for aesthetic effect.
P.S. The “ours” jar shows the true look the best. Due to the intense sunlight in the background (reflecting off of the snow), I needed the flash to pick up the chalk writing. The flash is what’s causing the shiny look to the chalkboard, that doesn’t normally show.
