I’ve been looking all over the area for a decent priced photographer, because we’re on a pretty tight budget for a very large wedding. So I’ve been thinking….what if I hire someone to take the pictures, then edit and print them myself? The thing is that with having photography as one of my hobbies, and with my photo editing background, I probably wouldn’t be happy any other way. So I’m contacting people on craigslist that will be willing to do this….good idea or bad?

Where are you located?
As a photographer myself I wont give unedited photos, even for free.

I think the best you will do is high res jpegs. No one is going to give away RAW files or unedited files. Also, I have not seen much talent on craigslist, it’s typically a place for newbies to start as the people on there tend to be bottom of the barrel with what they are willing to spend. Anyone with decent work can and will be able to charge more and doesn’t cator to a craigslist clientelle.
Look for local pro photographers in your area, and ask them how much it would be for XXX hours of coverage in which the only deliverable is high res color corrected jpgs on a CD. Then you could tweak the editing to your liking and get the prints made yourself.

If you are ok with someone inexperienced capturing your day and are not going to be disappointed if they screw something up / forget to capture something then go for it. Most CL photogs are pretty new and will do anything to get your biz.
I just hope you are not expecting them to pull rainbows out of their bottoms.
