I think the thing would be to get the ribbons on half off sales, or with coupons. I know every other week or so Hobby Lobby half off ribbon by the roll and it would be crazy to pay the full price. Also, look online for bulk ribbon? Or use some tulle which you can usually get for fairly cheap in big amounts to add in to add volume but not as expensive? It will look super cute I think!

If you use 2.5″ ribbon you will need about 40 to make an 8 foot wide backdrop. So then like 80 yards of ribbon, I found a couple places just googling “bulk ribbon” that sell 50 yard rolls for $25-30. So it could be less exspensive that way too! At Hobby Lobby they sell 2.5″ ribbon on 10 yard rolls, if you wait until the half off sales, they are 3.50 a piece so then only need 8 rolls or about $40 worth of ribbon!

If you want to save money, don’t use ribbon, its outrageously expensive for a project the size of backdrop.

Get 3-4 yard of natural unbleached muslin (which you can find at any fabric store for 99 cents to 2 dollar a yard), cut it in to strips, and dye it with RIT.

@gramgeek:  I don’t know what I would do without Hobby Lobby!! But I also love @BartenderPlease idea, from far away it wont look that different anyway. It just won’t be shiny like ribbon.

have you looked online?

Have you called a local sewing or craft store about getting a discount if you buy in bulk? Many will if you just ask. IE you drop it to two colors and order in a larger shipment it may help

It doesn’t look like it’s all ribbons, to me.  I would suggest getting a couple yards of fabric and making your own “ribbons”.  Most fabrics can be had at roughly two dollars a yard if on sale or on coupon.

ahh – found the picture:

This isn’t the finished product though. We added more temple bells and some glittery fabric butterflies.
