So a little before I even got engaged, Fiance and I kind of somewhat settled on a future “theme” for the wedding. I had always been drawn to a “whimsical tea party” style. A little Shabby Chic, a little vintage, a little quirky. Once we started throwing around “whimsical tea party” I started formulating what I wanted my wedding to look like. For centerpieces, we decided tea pots, vintage books, mismatched gold frames with table numbers, and possible a small milk vase with flowers. Next, we decided we were going to collect mismatched china for the wedding. I began scouring thrift stores and yard sales for pretty plates to use. After that was decided, all of our other ideas kind of fell into place. I stumbled upon a tutorial on Pinterest on how to make your own 3-tiered cake stands out of vintage dishes. I immediately fell in love with the idea and knew I wanted to make my own tiered cake stands for our cupcake display.
Tonight, I decided to finally try it and see if it worked…
In my humble opinion, I call this a success. The very top is a little wonky because I didn’t hit *quite* center, but aside from that, I think it’s lovely. I’ve seen these used as cake stands or jewelry holders, so I plan on making smaller ones for my bridesmaids as part of their gifts (possibly) so they can use them as jewelry holders. I’m not sure how many I’ll need for the wedding, but I’m totes excited
Oh, wow!! I’m seriously impressed! That looks so amazing–I would love to get something like that! It looks like some little gem you’d find while off antique-shopping somewhere. Really cute—I can imagine seeing little lemon cookies in there or jewelry. Love it!!
I made a couple of these for our wedding and they looked great on the dessert table! It gave so height and interest and different places to put different kinds of desserts. And it totally fits your theme! Love it!
MrsYokiman: They are so easy to make! Like…stupid easy. I’m absolutely dreadful at this kind of stuff and I put this together in under five minutes (with very, very minor help from FI). I bought the dishes at Goodwill for $1 ea., the hardware from Etsy for $6+shipping, so all and all it came together for about $12.00! I’ll post some more pics once I start making more!
MrsMeowton: I LOVE these! You did a great job!! Question – Can this be disassembled after? We are planning our wedding from another state, and everything I make has to be shipped to the wedding state…so I’m avoiding buying or making anything heavy if I just have to ship it in the end…I’d totally be willing to pay shipping costs for something like this if it could be taken apart after making it, though!
AprilinTX: You can do other kinds of cake stands with glue. I saw a tutorial on how to do it, but I was worried that the glue wouldn’t hold getting packed up and moved to our venue. You can find a dozen tutorials on youtube. This was the one I used (which also lists the drill bit you’ll need):
