We used an app for our ceremony but luckily found a DJ within our budget ($500) for reception.

Anyways…the ceremony music was super easy! 23 used the Wedding DJ app which is cheap. Then used a YouTube to MP3 link to download music onto the device (iPhone).

If budget is an issue, you probably won’t want (or be able) to go with a band — although I’m sure it can vary by region, they are generally quite expensive, and much more expensive than DJs.  We had a band, and we got them a bargain price, but they were still 10 -15 x more expensive than a DJ would have been.  I think a laptop with speaker could work fine if you’re going to have a more casual wedding and you’re okay not having an MC, and if you can find someone reliable willing to to turn the volume up or down as needed, or to turn it off for the cake cutting, for example.

starlightgirl :  Well that definitely changes my answer, but I do wonder if you want your Fiance and/or his friends to be “working” on your wedding day?

starlightgirl :  I second PP. I wouldn’t ask your fiancé and his friends to be working on your wedding day. Let them enjoy the wedding, not work during it

starlightgirl :  oh sorry. I figured if your fiancé was in a band with these guys, they were close enough to attend the wedding as guests. I saw you said your fiancé is more of a backup. Worst case scenario, the guitarist or vocalist can’t make it to the wedding which means your fiancé had to step up and fill that role. Which means he’s now working your wedding day.

Life happens and you never know if someone in the band can’t make it. I would stick with a DJ or an iPod playlist. I always feel like it might be hard to dance to a live band because it’s just less variety of music.
