Unfortunately, pricing is going to be vastly different depending on the area. I’m also having a backyard budget wedding (although rather large). I’ve just started looking and I’m budgeting $500-1000 for the DJ. I would recommend doing some online research to find a basic average for your area. And look around. DJs often own their own buisness, so if you can find somebody new you may be able to get a deal! Also, don’t be afraid to bargain. Be upfront with your budget and see if they can find a way to make it work. If you’re trying to save money, consider having the DJ only come for the dancing portion of the evening. You could have a friend play the music for the ceremony and have an ipod/laptop play a set list for music during dinner.

My DJ is costing $1100 from 6-10:00.  I know that prices can vary though.  Hopefully if you didn’t make it too late (maybe end around 11?), you could talk to your neighbours and they would cut you a break on the noise since it’s your wedding.

Will your wedding be in Montreal or Miami? Prices will be drasticly different depending on your location. I know that in Montreal noise bylaws require state would require you to keep it down past 11pm.

Why not have a friend/family member do it? An iPod can be just as effective, and give the friend a mic, with some speakers (home theatre should be fine if you have them aready). It’ll save a lot of money. Fiance and I are just going to use a playlist on an ipod, throw it to random and enjoy the night. Personally, I don’t see the point of paying for a DJ.

I vote to use an iPod and set up a dance floor.

@lionskitty:  Designate a person to be in control of the iPod if you’d like.  You would have to download a large selection of songs that you personally want.   You can do it in sections where you have “dinner music”, “first song”, etc.  That way it goes on it’s own if you don’t have someone in control.
