@Lollybags:  If they were off the wall songs then this would be normal.  But any good DJ has a large (and I mean LARGE) library of songs or at least has a database where they can get new songs from.  This sounds weird to me and like you said, if you have to get all the songs together yourself, you might as well IPod it.  Is there someone on the guest list or in the wedding party that is into this type of thing and could maybe man the IPod and microphone?  Someone who might enjoy it?

I think if I were a DJ, adding relatively popular songs to my library would be an investment I’d be willing to make. If you were asking for specific versions of obscure songs, or maybe songs specific to an international culture, I could understand he’d ask to you provide them–but not if you just want some Motown tunes. Maybe a bee with some experience DJing can weigh in with a different perspective, but I’d say look for another vendor (can you ask a friend or family member who doesn’t love dancing to keep track of the iPod? Not in a “sit here and do this boring task” kind of way, but more like, “hey, if you think about it, can you make sure everything’s still plugged in?”).

Thats not normal at all. Our dj was middle of the road regarding price/experience and he had every song imaginable, even the cuban artists that my in-laws requested. Sounds like this guy doesn’t know what he’s doing.

Yeah that’s a red flag for sure. Your ipod sounds like it’d be totally fine (especially if you’re on a budget). Just make sure you have a very long playlist ready so people aren’t scrolling through songs. But if you do decide to get a DJ, definitely find a different one, this guy sounds weird.

I immediately thought “nope, nope, nope”… that sounds very weird, unprofessional even. Especially since he wouldn’t let you pick from his songs. Go with someone else!

Yes, find another DJ. That is so weird to not have songs!
