You know, I was told a story about hiring a band too early that dropped my jaw.  Basically 6 months prior to the event, this couple was quoted for a used-to-be-awesome-in-the-70s band for $10k plus a rider.  This was so out of their budget its ridic.  Fast forward to a month before and they still hadn’t decided anything.  They called the same band up – who didn’t have anything on their calendar for that day – and they took $1500 and a pizza.

What’s my point?  Take it!  It won’t be an inconvenience or too expensive and it will add to the overall entertainment for the night.  I’m quit jealous, actually.

I think I would rather have a DJ (mostly b/c of what you said about if you want specific songs, I guess they’d have to be covers), but my Fiance is really into music (has done a lot of concert booking/promotion/etc) and wants a band.  The biggest issue I have with it is that he is really into ska/reggae music, which I don’t mind, but most our guests might.  I guess we’ll do some research and see how much things cost…I don’t really want to fight him on it b/c this is one of the few things that he really cares about.

If the prices were equal, I would still prefer a DJ. People dance to the music they know, and a good DJ has a bigger selection than than the most diverse of bands.

I prefer a band.  It seems much more festive.  That was one we didn’t even have to ask each other-we both knew we wanted a band.

Band all the way, especially if you are getting a deal! It really makes the event an “event” and people will remember the energy a band can bring as long as they are good. I would be sure to check out references and try to hear them/see them before deciding.

I used to be a bit of raver, and I want my guests to have a bit of a party. Definitely want a particular vibe with a wide variety of music and I am not sure that a band could take the guests on that kind of ‘ride’.

I agree with charlii.rouge! It all depends on the theme/style/vibe of your wedding. I’ve only been to one wedding where there was a band (and it was the nicest wedding I’d ever been to!!). The band covered alot of old and new, more current music so I did like them.

My younger brother just happens to be a professional DJ…so you can guess which route I’m going! Lol! And he’s also the best man. He’ll be pretty busy that day 🙂

The energy that a band can bring to the reception would be amazing, but I think a good DJ can also bring a ton of energy. Plus, I like that the fact that the DJ can provide any style or specific song that you request, whereas, with a band you are very limitied…
