My fiancee and I forgot to budget for a DJ. We are having the reception at a restaurant, so the thought never crossed my mind until recently. We’ve been shocked at some of the high DJ prices but have found a few in the $300-500 range, which is great. Now my fiancee told me today that she does not want a DJ. She would rather have an afterparty at a nightclub. I am terribly against this. I think we need music. Otherwise, after dinner, what will people do? I could bring my iPod and hook it up to the restaurant’s system, but I think that would just look cheap.
Should we keep the DJ or drop the idea? I think a DJ would enhance the reception. The only problem is the DJ we are leaning toward is a friend of friends of ours, and I’ve witnessed him in action. He talked waaaaay too much, and that concerned me. But I am sure I could ask him to keep his commentary to a minimum. Any thoughts?

I’m going to be using an iPod. =) I’m very excited about it. You get to control your entire playlist (including which songs go where), and it’s free! If the restaurant is going to let you hook up your iPod, go for it! Plus, is the hook up in the immediate view of your guests? If not, then it "looking cheap" shouldn’t really concern you.
I personally don’t think that DJs are a good choice. For one, you don’t have complete comtrol over the music and may be subjected to songs that you either hate, or are totally not appropriate. Or s/he may talk way too much. Etc.
I’d say go for the iPod. =) But I may be biased.

Jenniphyr, are you having anyone announce you? I would be okay with the iPod, but I’d like for us to be announced.

yeah I wanted to save money and have my bro record on an ipod but my Fiance said it’s happier with a DJ and he can motivate people better on the dance floor
if you have no more budget then definitely get music from an ipod
any other way to cut costs?
have your flowers DIY; scrap the limo; cut the guestlist
I lucked out and found a DJ for $600 in Manhattan; normal rate is $1400-2000; I cut costs severely in other ways so it’s affordable
there are ways to have things and not blow your budget; just cut costs in other areas

Try craigslist! You could put out an ad for an emcee, and just have that person be in charge of your ipod and announcing you. Interview a couple and hire the person with the best personality. If you can hook it into the restaurant’s system, you don’t have to pay for the sound system and music, which is a huge portion of a DJ’s costs.
