In the US the bridesmaids pay for their dresses, but the bride consults with each of them privately about their budget constraits before a dress is picked. Anything else the bride requires the bride pays for: shoes, hair, makeup, jewelry, flowers.

I’m in Canada and I had to pay for my own dress, hair, and makeup as a bridesmaid. We were given the option to do our own hair/makeup instead of having to do it professionally.. so at least it wasn’t forced. I think it’s generous of you to pay for the hair/makeup and reasonable to ask them to pay for their dresses.

I’m in the US and have always paid for my own bridesmaid dresses in weddings i’ve been in.
For my own wedding, I paid for my bridesmaids hair and makeup. They did pay for their own dresses but they were given complete autonomy on price because it just had to be a long black dress. I believe many of them spent under $100.

In the UK the bride pays, if she wants hair and makeup she pays for that as well. I was maid of honour at my friend’s wedding and she paid for dress, shoes, hair and makeup. I didn’t expect the hair and makeup but she wanted us to have specific styles so as another bee mentioned in the UK if you say you pay.
