I know a lot of people wouldn’t recommend this, but if you know you are getting engaged, can you book some of the more important venues/vendors now before they book up? We actually booked our venue and photographer a few months before the actual engagement.

It can be done, but you will prob have to get your dress from David’s or Alfred Angelo’s. You will have to make quick decsions. And  you will have to keep DIY to a minimum. Keep your color scheme simple. I would pick one color and use various shades of that color (so you don’t drive yourself insane trying to find the exact shade). Or if you want to make it really easy use black and gray (or silver). You might have to spent more money on convenience.

If you have your heart set on something very specific, then you might want to postpone.

Ignore everyting I said. I thought you wanted to get married in 2013. For 2014, you have plenty of time.

I planned my wedding in 9 months while working full time, going to school part time, and I got it all done. It was DIY heavy too. I got a designer dress at a regular shop. You will definitely have enouh time. I didn’t have a problem with a single vendor already being booked, but I had all of mine within the first two weeks of being engaged.

I’ve been engaged for a year, but started planning in January! My wedding is June 15, 2013. I got pretty much everyone I wanted vendor wise, dress of my dreams, ect. The only thing is I don’t work in the winter (I’m a carpenter) so I’ve had ALOT of free time. A year is plenty of time chica!

We’ll have been engaged a little over 8 months, so no worries you will have plenty of time 🙂 At that, we didn’t really start until about 6 months before… We still have been able to get everything we wanted, and I don’t think we’ve paid any extra to do it either.

    Have fun planning!

@BabyCarat:  We just got engaged less than a month ago, and we’re shooting for October 2013. That’s just about 8 months from the proposal, and I’m not too concerned about not being able to pull it off. My sister had a very nice traditional wedding, and she was engaged for the same amount of time. Plus she took a few months off from planning because of a death in her then-fiance’s family. Of course it depends on how quickly your vendors fill up, but I don’t think you have anything to worry about!
