I know etiquette-wise that we are supposed to invite the boss…especially since I’m inviting my 3 closest co-workers that I work with daily in tiny satellite offices (just us in a little office struggling along, makes us pretty close). However, I was planning on inviting my boss and her boyfriend out of kindness, but found out she might be leaving the dept soon….now what!? She’s on vacation for 2 weeks so I get some time to think about it. Do I invite her anyway or wait to see what happens? I have no idea who would replace her. Also, was going to invite my bosses boss, but she retired and now we have a new woman in her place. Do in invite her…!? Help!

Suppose she does leave. Would you still be friendly enough with her to chat and catch up with her outside of work? Is it public knowledge she might be leaving soon (or is she being forced out)?
If you are friends, you might want to invite her anyway, and explain that even if you are not working together anymore, you’d still like her to come….but if she couldn’t make it, you’d understand.

Etiquette doesn’t say that anyone HAS to be invited. I wouldn’t invite my boss unless it was someone I liked, and wanted to spend time with outside of work.

I would not invite any level of management unless they are legitimately your friend, someone you hang out with after work and on weekends and generally have a very close relationship with.
