@kaygee_86:  What does your venue say?

Depends where it is. If its at your house, no. But most venues you rent will require it.

Will it be self-served or will there be a bartender? A bartender service should have one as it provides aom protection should you be sued for something relating to the alcohol.

@kaygee_86:  The reason places have liquor licenses is for liability — if a person drinks too much, drives away, and gets into a car crash…they can sue the venue, you, the caterer, the person supplying drinks — EVERYONE. That’s why the licensing and insurance aspects of it are so important.  I know we all hope our guests will be responsible adults, but you can’t count on it.  If your venue does not require insurance for alcohol consumption, I recommend looking into whether you can purchase it for yourself.  Or have a cop in uniform, lol.

Well and your state ABC board likes knowing when there are going to be a lot of people all boozing it up at the same time. I would check with a liquor store and ask if they sell one-off banquet permits.

Liquor licenses are a little hard to get around our parts and since it’s really connected to tax revenue I don’t see the point…I would however verify that the venue you are using has liquor liability and licensed bartenders…in the unfortunate case that one of your guests was in fact overserved and caused an accident, the liability of the venue and bartender in question would pay for legal defense in case of a lawsuit.

@kaygee_86:  I would call other similar locations in the area and ask what their policies are. This is one of the things my venue coordinator warned me about: if the caterer does not have the proper licenses for alcohol, the whole wedding party can be kicked out.  It’s THAT important. You don’t want to be in a situation where your whole day is ruined because of a stupid government law.  Call around and see what information you can gather.  Good luck!
