    No, it's not necessary

yes, contact everyone who responded to you

yes, contact only the ones who had actual conversations with you (including friend's sister)

shmits:   I think it would be polite to send an email thanking them for their [time/information] and say that you will be working with another photographer for your wedding.  You don’t have to say who, just someone else.   Whatever it takes to let them know they are free on that day so they won’t save it for you – although I doubt they would without a deposit.

shmits:  I had reached out to 4 photographers, mainly looking for pricing and their availability. One was even an old co-worker of DH, and who he knew well. After deciding on the one we went with, I only reached out to one of the other 3 to explain that I had gone with someone else, and it was mainly because she knew people in my family (she used to work with my mom) but would keep her in mind if something didin’t work out. I mainly did this because I was in contact with her a lot more – she had a great deal. But, the one we went with ended up working out in the end.

One photographer I talked to asked me to tell her if we went with someone else. She said it’s really frustrating when she doesn’t know, and is not sure that she can give the date to another person.

I think it is a good idea so they can book that day.  Also tell them why, as this will help them with their business / marketing / data.  Not that you owe them anything, but this information is so crucial for them to build a competitive business.

I had email contact with 5 photographers but only spoke with 2. I only reached out to the photographer who I had spoken with that I didn’t end up going with.

I emailed probably 20 photographers; if they emailed after a time to check in, I would then kindly let them know that I appreciated it but had gone with someone else. Only if I went so far as to speak to them on the phone would I reach out specifically.

shmits:  As a wedding photographer, if it’s someone I’ve been having coorespondance with (ie: a few emails between us or a phone call / meeting) I really appriciate them following up to let me know if they’ve chosen someone else. If it’s someone who has inquired and I repiled with my pricing and never heard from them again – I’d already assume they went with someone else.

photographer here. i definitely like to know from people i’ve invested time in – multiple emails, a phone call, or an in-person meeting. if they emailed me and i replied back and i never heard from them again, i usually assume they’re not interested. but it’s always SO nice to know! a good photog would not take this personally
