This happened to me. I don’t think you have to be present while they were showing the apartment as long as the landlord accompanies the people viewing. They understand you are moving and won’t mind the clutter, I promise. It is legal for them to do this as long as they have given notice, which they have.

You don’t have to stay home all day. Pack up your valuables & take them with you first, then do as you please. Take kitty with you if you can, or maybe see if a friend could watch him for the day.

Could you board your kitty for the day?

The landlord has a key, right? I wouldn’t bother being there for showings!

I am afraid this is totally normal. Landlords need to rent the place for the coming month not just start showing it after you are gone

Take your kitty and hang out somewhere else for the day. Landlords are supposed to show the apartment before you move out, otherwise how would they find another tenant to start right after you move out? I’m surprised they are actually waiting until now. It’s perfectly legal as long as they give you notice that they will be showing your apartment on X day.

I’ve always had landlords show while I still lived there.  They don’t like having any gap in tenants because that’s a month they’re not getting rent.  Typically I am not home when they do it and when I’ve seen apartments the tenant is not there.

As for it being messy that is expected.  The people viewing it will realize that the current person is packing.

I think you are making this worse than it is…  As others said, you do not have to be there.  I have 2 cats and a dog and I am selling my place.  I leave them all there when people come to look.  It’s no biggie.  People looking know you are in the process of moving and don’t expect it to be spotless.
