i dont think you need a etiquette book to tell you what is the right thing to do in this case.   i would thank them personally and also give them a card where you can write a few things about how important/supportive/loved/whatever they are – cherish and enjoy your engagement, it goes so fast!

It might be a nice gesture so they know just how much you appreciate them! My parents love getting mail from me, even for no reason!

I would write them a card but make it more than just a thank you.  express how much they mean to you and how important their love and support is.
