I guess it depends on the individual family!

My parents gave me a nice shower gift but I’m not sure if I’ll get a “wedding” gift (they are paying 2/3 of the wedding while we pay the rest).  I don’t know if there’s any rule about how this is supposed to work.

My parents gave a gift and they did pay for the wedding. They actually gave us a set amount of money for the wedding, we could spend what we wanted, and they gifted us the rest for our future. They also paid for some things for the wedding as a gift so it didn’t have to fit into that budget, like my dress and veil.

My hubby’s parents paid for alcohol and the rd, and they also gave us a nice gift.

Yeah, it depends on the family.

Most parents do give a gift just because they want to, but I’m not aware of an etiquette rule or law that says they must.

My dad has said he’ll give us some money towards the wedding, but that will prob be the morning of, so we will consider that as a gift, rather than paying for wedding. Future In-Laws are not paying for anything, so we may get a small gift, but I certainly don’t expect one. In general I don’t expect gifts from within family at all, weddings are dear enough as it is.

My parents who paid for our wedding bought us a video camera for our honeymoon and shades for our house. My in-laws who did not contribute gave us money for a wedding gift.

I think it depends on the family, too. Everyone is different. I know my parents both plan to give gifts in addition to helping pay for the wedding. Mr. Starfish’s family paid for the rehearsal dinner and already gave us our wedding gift.

My parents are paying for the majority of the wedding, and my Dad called me a couple days ago to make sure I’d be okay with him and my Mom gifting me our entire china set (uhhh yes Dad, of course that is more than okay!!!)

My FI’s parents gifted us 4 Le Creuset pieces.

Both very generous gifts!

What kind of gifts do parents usually gift?  Or in-laws?

My parents are giving us my great grandmothers china and an acreage that we had really wanted.  I don’t expect anything from his mother as she is retired and on a small fixed income.
